Jose Rizals Travels

In Sunny Spain (1882-1885)


After finishing the 4th Year of the medical course in the University of Santo Tomas,

Jose Rizal, being disgusted with the antiquated method of instruction in this
Dominican-owned university and the racial prejudice of Dominican professors
against Filipino students, he decided to complete his studies in Spain.
Secret Departure for Spain (May 3, 1882)

Rizal left Philippines for the first time Spain. He boarded the
Salvadora using a passport of Jose Mercado, which was procured
for him by his uncle Antonio Rivera, father of Leonor Rivera. He
was accompanied to the quay where the Salvadora was moored by
his uncle Antonio, Vicente Gella, and Mateo Evangelista.

Singapore

(May 8, 1882)
while the steamer was
approaching
Singapore, Rizal saw
a beautiful island.
Fascinated by its scenic
beauty, he remembered
Talim Island with the
Susong Dalaga.

May 9, 1882

Rizal arrived at Singapore. He registered at


Hotel de la Paz, and spent two days on a
sightseeing soiree of the city, which was a
colony of England.
He saw the famous Botanical Garden,

the beautiful Buddhist temples,


the busy shopping district, and the statue of
Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles
(founder of Singapore)

From Singapore to Colombo


(May 11, 1882)
In Singapore, Rizal; transferred to
another ship Djemnah,
a French steamer, which
left Singapore for
Europe.
May 17, 1882
Rizal arrived at Punta de Gales
(Point Galle)
- a seacoast town in southern
Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).
May 18, 1882
he left Punta de Gales for
Colombo.

First Trip Through Suez Canal

From Colombo, the Djemnah continued the voyage


crossing the Indian Ocean to the Cape of Guardafui, Africa.
For the first time, Rizal sighted
the barren coast of Africa, which
he called an
inhospitable land but famous.

Naples and Marseilles (June 11, 1882)

From Port Said,


Rizal disembarked and, accompanied by a guide, went around the
City of Naples for one hour. This was the first European ground he
set foot on.
June 12, 1882

At ten oclock in the evening, the boat anchored at Marseilles. He


sleptn board. He visited the famous Chateau dif, where Dantes,
hero of the The Count of Monte Cristo, was imprisoned.

Barcelona (June 15, 1882)

Rizal left Marseilles by train for the


last lap of his trip to Spain.
He crossed the Pyrenees and stopped
for a day at the frontier town of
Port Bou.
After the passport inspection at
Port-Bou, Rizal continued his trip by
rail, finally reaching his
destination---- Barcelona on June 16, 1882.

Life in Madrid (November 3, 1882)


Rizal led a Spartan life in Madrid.
September 2, 1882

Rizal matriculated at the Universidad Central de Madrid. He took


the following subjects: medical clinic, surgical clinic, legal medicine
and obstetrical clinic.

Rizals First Visit to Paris (1883)


June 17 to August 20, 1883
Rizal left Madrid for Paris to spend his summer and to observe the
big French City.

Paris to Berlin (1885-1887)


After completing his studies in Madrid, Rizal went to Paris and

Germany in order to specialize in ophthalmology.


Rizal in Strasburg, Germany 2 February 1886

Rizal arrived at Strasburg, Germany. He visited the celebrated


cathedral and climbed a tower of 142 meters high, the fourth
highest of the European towers.

Rizal's Grand Tour of Europe with Viola

May 11, 1887

Accompanied by Maximo Viola, Rizal left Berlin to visit the cities of


Eurupe, including Dresden, Leitmeritz, Prague, Vienna, Munich,
Nuremberg, Ulm, Lausanne, and Geneva.

Rizal in Leitmeritz, Bohemia(May 13,

1887)
First Meeting with Blumentritt
Rizal and Viola arrived at the
railroad station of
Leitmeritz, Bohemia.
(now Litomerice, Czechoslov akia)
Proessor Blumentritt, who
had received their wire, was at the station.
They stayed in Leitmeritz from May 13 to May
16, 1887.

Vienna (May 20-Ma7 24, 1887)

Rizal and Viola arrived in the beautiful city of Vienna, capital of


Austria-Hungary.
May 25, 1887

With Viola, Rizal left Vienna for Salzburg which the, too, left the
following day, May 26, for Munich.
June 6, 1887

Rizal and Viola arrived at Geneva and boarded at Rue due Rhone 3,
Pension Bel-Air. Here Rizal expressed his feeling against the
exhibition of the Igorots in Madrid side by side with the animals
and plants. In a letter to Blumentritt, he wished the Igorots would
die immediately to avoid further sufferings.

Italy

From Geneva, Rizal went to Italy.


He visited Turin, Mila, Venice, and
Florence. On June 27, 1887,
he reached Rome, the Eternal City
and also called the City of the Caesars.

First Homecoming, (1887-1888)


August 1887

after five years of memorable sojourn in Europe, he returned to the


Philippines and practiced medicine in Calamba.
Farewell to Calamba

Governor General Terrero summoned Rizal and advised him to


leave the Philippines for his own good. He was giving Rizal a
chance to escape the fury of the friars wrath.

Rizal boarded the ferry streamer KiuKiang for Macao.
During his two-week visit in Hong Kong,
Rizal studied the Chinese life.
February 22,1888- date he left Hong Kong
Destination- Japan

February 28,1888- date Rizal arrived in


the land of Cherry Blossoms (Yokohama)
The next day he went to Tokyo
He was invited to lived at the Spanish
Legation although he was staying at the
Tokyo Hotel.
Rizal didnt know how to speak the
Japanese language although he looked
like a Japanese.
To avoid embarrassment, Rizal decided
to study the Japanese language.

He was enchanted by the natural


beauty of Japan, the charming
manners of the Japanese people,
and the picturesque shrine.

There he met a Japanese girl


and fell in love with her.
She was Seiko Usui, who Rizal
affectionately called.

O-Sei-San

Sacrificing his own happiness, he had to carry


his mission to Europe and resumed his voyage
leaving behind O-Sei-San
Despite his sorrowing heart, he enjoyed the
pleasant trans-pacific voyage

Rizal first saw

Rizal arrived in
San Francisco

On board the

All passengers were not allowed to land and the ship was
placed under quarantine on the ground. (it came from the
Far East where a cholera epidemic was ranging.

After a week of quarantine, all first class


passenger includin him were permitted
to land.

May 4, 1888, Rizal arrived in San Francisco


and registered at the palace hotel and stayed
there for two days. He left for Oakland, then
to Sacramento and the following day of May
6, he arrived in Reno, Nevada.

then Chicago,Albany and on Sunday of May 13, he


reached New York.

He visited the scenic


and historic places and
on May 16,1888 he left
New York for Liverpool

Martyrdom at Bagumbayan
After the court-martial, Rizal returned to

his cell in Fort Santiago to prepare his


rendezvous with destiny. During his last
24 hours on earth ---- from 6:00 A.M.

the guardia civil who were
guarding Rizal. The orange

at Fort Santiago, a signal to begin


the death march to Bagumbayan,
the designated place for the
execution.
