Introduction
History
The word bioengineering was introduced by
British scientist and broadcaster Heinz Wolff in
1954.
The first biological engineering program was
launched at Missisipi State university in 1967 and
it paved the way for initiating bioengineering
programmes throughout the world.

Process
Advantages
Bioremediation
Using engineered microbes and their enzymes to
promote degradation.
Fuel production
Bioengineered microbes can be used to convert
CO2 and waste into gasoline compatible
transportation fuel

Production of chemicals
Producing chemicals of commercial interest or
biomedical importance such as insulin.
Use in medicinal purposes
Lactobacillus Species present in gastrointestinal
tracts are used to prevent diarrhoea and urinary
infections.
Producing vaccines to treat tumours
Genetically modified yeast species are used to
stimulate the immune system.

Fermentation
Genetically modified saccharomyces species
are used in wine production to get a high
yield.

Disadvantages
This process is very expensive and so many
researches should be done prior to the usage.
Lack of scientists with adequate knowledge
and training.
The risk of occurring mutations .
It will affect the balance of the nature in an
adverse manner.
Sometimes this technique may be used for
manufacturing bioweapons.
