Socio- cultural Issue: Philippine Youth Problems

Affects the Countrys Progression

Introduction:

Education
Education is one of the most important things in life that an individual must have. As

it defined, it is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a

group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching,
training. Moreover, it frequently takes place under the guidance of others, but may
also be autodidactic. Any experience that has a formative effect on the way one
think, feels, or acts may be considered educational (Wikipedia). That is the reason
why, the Philippine government assigns the highest budgetary priority ( Article XIV
sec. 5 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution) to provide free education to all.
According to one of the readings, education is absolutely beneficial for society on
the whole. It is a life long process to each person that needs to be reinforced
throughout life. However, we need education system that may eradicate illiteracy
and may provide the common man an access not only to basic education but also
to higher and technical education.
Education is a teaching and learning process that involves teachers whose function
is to teach young individuals and learners who will gain all the learning imparted by
the teacher. But if one of them fails to perform his duty in the said process it could
not be realized.

What are the

common
problems that
affects the Youth
for achieving
each goals in life,
as a Student and
as the Hero of the
Land?

Mental health is a the most

common problem that students report. You
will find some basic information on these
problems.

Stress

We are all familiar with stress. It is a normal response that we

experience to some extent everyday. A certain level of stress is

necessary to function and to motivate us to reach our full potential. Too
much stress, however, can be a health hazard. The first important step
in stress management involves being aware of when our stress levels
have become unhealthy. Once stress overload is recognised, there are a
range of stress management skills available to address the problem.

A state of chronic stress is not reached overnight - it takes time! Before

reaching this state we may notice many symptoms. Rather than
acknowledge the signs, we may push ourselves harder, pretending that
everything is fine. This continual exposure to stress decreases our ability
to function in every area of our lives.

Managing anger
Anger is a normal and natural emotion; everyone gets angry at some time.
When anger is managed properly it is not a problem. In fact, it can even be

useful. Anger can signal when your rights are being violated or when your
needs are being ignored by others. It can also motivate you to address
problems with another person or make changes in your life.
However, if anger is expressed in harmful ways, or persists over a long
period of time, then it can lead to problems in many areas and negatively
affect your quality of life and relationships. Prolonged or chronic anger can
lead to mental health problems like depression, and physical problems like
"stress" headaches and high blood pressure. Sleep disorders, digestive
problems and cardiovascular problems can also result from long-term
anger.
To protect yourself against these problems occurring, it is important that
anger is expressed. The healthiest and most effective way to express
anger is in a manner that does not cause social, mental or physical
harm. The goal of managing anger is to help you find healthy ways to
express your anger and resolve the problems that ignite it.

Anxiety
Everybody feels nervous or anxious at some time; it is a normal

human reaction. Anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes in

your life and causes impairment or distress because it is:
excessive,
intrusive,
uncontrollable,
persistent, and
exists for more days than it doesnt.
This type of thinking may cause you to ask yourself lots of what if
type questions and to worry about things excessively. It is
important to use helpful thinking strategies that target negative
beliefs and relieve the worrying thoughts that cause anxiety. When
the tension builds up in your mind, it will give you little peace from
unhelpful thinking patterns.

Suicidal thoughts
If you think you might harm yourself, seek help immediately.
Call 000 (police, ambulance, fire)
Call Lifeline 13 11 14
Get someone to take you to your local hospital emergency

department
Go to your GP
If you have suicidal thoughts, don't try to manage on your
own. If you feel like you are going to harm yourself, it is
important to contact someone to talk about it now, or
contact your local hospital emergency department. It is
important to get some support for yourself as soon as
possible.

Sometimes problems can seem

Why do
some
people
think about
committing
suicide?

overwhelming. Some people think

about suicide, but do not plan or act on
it. However, for others the thought of
suicide might begin to seem like a real
alternative to a problem or situation
that appears hopeless or as if there is
no solution. When people feel this bad
it is hard to think about other choices
or other ways to solve problems.
Sometimes, people have thoughts
about suicide because they are going
through some really stressful situations
or because they are suffering from
depression.

Stressful situations
Situations that might contribute to a feeling of hopelessness

include:
relationship break-ups

school, uni or work problems
unemployment or being unemployed for a long time
feeling like you don't belong anywhere
any problem that you can't see a solution for and is ongoing
mental illness, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and
depression.

Depression
In simple terms depression is a significant period of negative mood or

sadness which usually involves a loss of interest or enjoyment from

nearly all activities and lasts for at least two weeks.
The symptoms of depression may be different for each person. A person
experiencing a depression may display a range of symptoms including:

including frequent waking during the night
