COUPLING DEFINITION
A coupling is a device used to connect two
shafts together at their ends for the
purpose of transmitting power.
Couplings do not normally allow
disconnection of shafts during operation,
however there are torque limiting
couplings which can slip or disconnect
when some torque limit is exceeded.

THE COUPLING CONSUMPTION PURPOSES

To provide for the connection of shafts

of units that are manufactured
separately such as a motor and
generator and to provide for
disconnection for repairs or alterations.
To provide for misalignment of the
shafts or to introduce mechanical
flexibility.
To reduce the transmission of shock
loads from one shaft to another.

To introduce protection against

overloads.
To alter the vibration characteristics
of rotating units.
To connect driving and the driven
part
To transfer power one end to another
end.

COUPLING TYPES
Compression Coupling
Acompression couplingis a unique type of fittingused to
connect tubing. Thesefittings are used in liquid and gas
applications. Compression couplingsare manufactured from
various materials, including brass, copper, plastic and cast
iron. The most commoncompression couplingsare made of
brass
Flexible Coupling
Flexible couplingsare used to transmit torque from one shaft
to another when the two shafts are slightly
misaligned.Flexible couplingscan accommodate varying
degrees of misalignment up to 3 and some parallel
misalignment.

Chain Coupling
Chain coupling is a flexible coupling of
amazingly simple construction. It consists
of a combination of one coupling chain
and a pair of coupling sprockets. Flexible
and strong.

Disc Type
Transmits torque from a driving to a driven bolt
tangentially on a commonbolt circle. Torque is
transmitted between the bolts through a series of
thin, stainless steel discs assembled in a pack.
Misalignment is accomplished by deforming of the
material between the bolts.
Spider Type
Is a type of general purpose power transmission
coupling that also can be used inmotion
control(servo) applications. It is designed to transmit
torque (by connecting two shafts) while damping
system vibrations and accommodating misalignment,
which protects other components from damage.

THE COMPILATION IN COUPLING

It should be easy to connect and
disconnect the coupling.
It does allow some misalignment between
the two adjacent shaft rotation axis.
It is the goal to minimize the remaining
misalignment running operation to
minimize power transmission to maximize
machine run time.
It should have no projecting part.
