Landing gear mechanism

By :- Vikram Ghogare

Abstract
Landing gear of an aircraft is an equipment that serves two
primary functions. First, it allow aircraft to safely and
successfully land and second is to support aircraft at rest
condition. Landing gear is designed according to
requirement and nature of work of aircraft.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this chapter is to present a introduction and
literature
review summarizing the previous published work relevant to
research
objectives.

LITERATURE REVIEW

The shape optimization can be done.

Use of composite material may reduce weight and strength can
be improved.
The test should be build and analysis can be performed on the
landing gear unit
Assembly is the process in which two or more objects are joined
together to achieve the desired function. Assembly modeling is
the process of creating designs that consist of two or more
components assembled together at their respective work
positions.
The components are brought together and assembled in the
Assembly Design environment by applying suitable parametric
assembly constraints to them.

INTRODUCTION
Aircrafts major component that is needed to be designed is
landing gear. The landing gear is the structure that supports an
aircraft on the ground and allows it to take-off, and land.
the structural design aspects of landing gear are not addressed;
but, those design parameters which strongly impact the aircraft
configuration design and aircraft aerodynamics will be discussed.
In addition, some aspects of landing gear such shock absorber,
retraction mechanism and brakes are assumed as non-aeronautical
issues and may be determined by a mechanical engineer.
In general, the followings are the landing gear parameters which
are to be determined :
1. Type (e.g. nose gear (tricycle), tail gear, bicycle)
2. Fixed (faired, or un-faired), or retractable, partially retractable

3. Height
4. Wheel base
5. Wheel track
6. The distance between main gear and aircraft cg
7. Strut diameter
8. Tire sizing (diameter, width)
9. Landing gear compartment if retracted
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION
Landing gear vibration includes self-induced oscillation referred to as shimmy and brakeinduced vibration.
Shimmy may be caused by a number of oscillations such as low torsional stiffness ,
excessive freeplay in gear box , wheel imbalance , or worn parts .
Brake-induced vibration includes conditions known as gear walk , squeal and chatter
which are caused by the characteristics of friction between the brake rotating and
nonrotating parts.
Squeal refers to the high frequency rotation oscillation of the brake stator assembly
whereas chatter and gear walk refer to the low frequency fore and motion of th gear.

Conclusion:
The fundamental method of modelling the
deformation during the landing of lander is
derived. Based on ADAMS & ANSYS
simulation software, the rigid flexible coupling
dynamics of a system with flexible cantilever
attached to the main lander is analyzed. For
both taking account of deformation and taking
no account of deformation, the simulation
results indicate that the deformation of
primary strut has considerable effect on
stability of the lunar lander system.
