Lowering the cost of data center management

Peter Thomas
Senior Director, Technology Solutions, Oracle Asia Pacific
Manageability Goals

• Lower Management Costs

• Largest line item in TCO is management cost – not license cost
• Costs increasing with growth in system complexity and size
• Self-managing systems significantly lower managements costs

• Increase System Availability

• System unavailability no longer an option
• Unplanned down-time must be minimized/eliminated
• Eliminate Human Error – # 1 cause of unplanned down-time

• Meet/Exceed Service Level Agreements (SLA’s)

• System performance impacts business productivity
• Business must meet their SLA’s
• Deliver reliable and predictable performance by proactive auto-tune

What does all this mean for the DBA ?

• The role of the DBA is rapidly evolving

• Typically more responsibility and workload for all things Oracle
• Yielding responsibility to other roles that are defined in the
enterprise now
• Proliferation of IT resources is inversely proportional to resources
assigned to deploy and manage them
• EM is on the road to ‘enterprise’ management
• No longer the ‘database management’ tool of pre-EM 10g days
• Oracle eco-system getting so wide and deep that it’s evolving out
of necessity as well as strategically
To illustrate the point…

• The DBA is dead ! Long live the DBA !

• Then – “I’ve got this form that hits my Manufacturing database
and it seems to be running slow”
• Now – “I have a J2EE application coded inj JSF using Spring,
Tapestry and Toplink or Hibernate (or something) that’s
accessing and IM infrastructure using JAAS/JAZN to validate u
user is authenticated to store SSO credentials for a Web 2.0
application built usiung Ajax – oh and it’s killing the RAC cluster
– I think”
• Tools are essential for survival – and sanity !
• EM is designed to aid users in the shift from component
to application level management

British Telecom
• Increase “first time right” delivery of RAC solutions to customer.
• No capability at DBA level to compare OS configs within and
Challenge between clusters or single nodes
 View into “state” of the environment
• Get DBAs to use CM reporting and change history functionality
to prove and resolve OS conflicts quickly and more confidently
Solution • Don’t underestimate the power of scheduled config snapshots
Approach when faced with the “we didn’t make any changes” defence
• Leverage compare against gold configuration for consistency

• “Using the deployment summary reporting capability in 10.2 has

pleased a considerable amount of people not previously able to
mine this kind of information”
Benefit • “Our RAC pre-provide story is saving man days, not man hours”
• “RAC node compare automated functionality found configuration
differences that our best DBA could not find in three days!”
Bayer

• Patch management is costly and labor intensive for 2000

databases across 500 hosts
Challenge • Multiple Oracle database versions across multiple platforms
• Quarterly CPUs take a lot of DBA time
• Using deployment procedures for applying CPUs, one-offs and
Solution patchsets
Approach • Use gold image based cloning to roll out pre-patched images on
new servers

• Faster way to deploy patches

• Low avoidable failure rate per operation
Benefit
• ~1 hour of manual activity reduced to a minute
• ~4 hours for patchsets across servers reduced to 10 minutes
Q3: How long did it take BT’s top DBA
to find configuration differences in
RAC ?
• 10 seconds
