In 1849 the Bourdon tube pressure gauge was

patented in France by Eugene Bourdon.

The pressure gauge is one of the widely used

equipments for measurement of pressure.
÷

The bourdon tube works on the principle that,

´Pressure in a curved tube will try to straighten itµ.

When pressure is applied, the tube will straighten out

until the difference in force is balanced by the elastic
resistance of the material composing the tube.

The working part of a Bourdon gauge consist of a tube

that is bent into a circular arc and is oval in cross
section so that it will tend to straighten more easily
when under pressure .
The open end of the tube
passes through a socket
which is threaded so that
the gauge can be screwed
into an opening in the
hydraulic system.
The closed end of the tube
is linked to a pivoted
segment gear in mesh with
a small rotating gear to
which a pointer is
attached.

The C-shaped Bourdon tube has a hollow, elliptical

cross section.
It is closed at one end and is connected to the fluid
pressure at the other end.
A pointer is attached to the closed end of the tube
through a linkage arm and a gear and pinion assembly,
which rotates the pointer around a graduated scale.
It is generally made of Stainless steel or Brass.
They are classified on the basis of load acting on
them. E.g.: 1 kg, 2kg «. And so on.
If the load is less than 70 or 80 kg., then C- type is
used otherwise spiral type is used.

Socket : The portion between Bourdon tube and

opening is called socket. The B.T. is weld to
it by GMAW.
It is generally made of S.S. or Brass.

Case: The body which provides the room for the B.T.
and socket system is called case.
Generally there are two types: S.S. case and M.S.
case.
S.S case undergoes buffing or grinding and M.S. case
undergoes painting.
Moment: The moment is a small
mechanism which is for
transmitting motion
from B.T. to pointer mounted
above dial for readings.
In moment, there is a link
connected to B.T. end and
extends to a sector and pinion.
 The pinion meshes with the
gear and transfers the motion.
 This motion is then transferred
to hair spring.
 A pointer is mounted that
moves due to elongation in
spring and gives reading on dial.
ial: The dial is made of aluminium sheet generally
and in some cases, of acrylic material.
It is painted with white colour and conditioned in oven
at high temperature.

Window (Glass): Glasses are of different types. It

can be a toughened glass, commercial
glass, press fit glass, safety glass or
simple glass.

Pointer: It is made of aluminium or brass.

The Bourdon pressure gauge is a widely used

equipment on industry level. Mainly it is used where
thermal and fluid field comes in account.

In the case of a boiler it is must, also called as

mounting. In other pressure vessels it is required.

ue to its simplicity and basic design it is easy to

mount and hence more popular. In some case
manometer has replaced it, but yet its significance is
not changed.
