INTRODUCTION
TEM Cell is a rectangular coaxial
transmission line resembling strip
line , with outer conductor joined
together.
The rectangular section is tapered at
both ends and matched to a 50 ohms
coaxial transmission line.
Using TEM cell is a common
laboratory approach for EMI/EMC
measurements.

APPLICATIONS

Nitrogen containing carbon nano tubes as

platinum catalyst supports were
characterized by electron microscopic
technique and electrochemical analysis.
The patterns show the presence of Pt and
the micrograph of TEM shows that the Pt
particles are uniformly distributed on the
surface of the nitrogen containing carbon
nano tube with an average particle size of
3nm.

Electric circuits on PCBs, which can

produce EME, are composed of ICs,
cooperating active and passive
components, connecting traces,
power, control and signal lines as well
as I/O ports and attached cables.
The EME is caused by functional
activity of ICs and other active
components and by the flow of time
varying electric currents.

Integrated Circuits as the Source of

Electromagnetic Emissions
Complex
and
fast
ICs
such
as
microprocessors, microcontrollers, digital
signal processors and various ASICs, often
have large transients in the supply currents.
It is then justified to treat the question of
EME of the integrated circuits in the same
manner as in the case of PCBs.

Emission levels are higher for larger

currents and faster changes of currents and
voltages.

The radiation level can be measured

inside a TEM cell for higher frequencies.
The IC is mounted on its test board that
is clamped to a mating port (wall port)
cut in the top or bottom of a TEM cell.
The RF voltage appearing at the input of
the connected spectrum analyser is
related to the electromagnetic potential
of the IC and its application (test)
circuit.

Other Applications of TEM CELL are:

Use of 3-D TEM Cells for Total
Radiated Power Measurements.
To study Electromagnetic radiation
from cellular phones.
To measure antenna characteristics
like antenna factors, antenna gain
and antenna patterns.

ADVANTAGES OF TEM CELL

Simple Construction
Ease of calculation
Independent Field Intensity inside the cell
Relatively Strong Fields
These advantages may be well limited when an
Equipment Under Test ( EUT ) is immersed in the cell
The limitation is a function of EUT size and its
electrical properties.
It can be used at low frequencies.
Antenna factor can be precisely calculated when
compared to the anechoic chamber.

DISADVANTAGES OF TEM
CELL
When a test specimen is placed inside a
TEM cell, the electric field distribution will
be altered.
To minimize the deviations, the size of the
EUT is limited.
The field strength in which the EUT is
placed inside the TEM cell is not the same
as the field strength existing if the EUT
were to be a point source in the classical
electromagnetic theory sense.

DISADVANTAGES OF TEM
CELL
More power is required to produce
the given field strength in a large cell
when compared to a smaller cell
So it is not economical to use a very
large TEM cell.
Large objects cannot be used inside
a TEM cell.
