WORK and ENERGY

BY GROUP

OBJECTIVES:
What is work?
What is energy?
How are work, energy and power related?

WORK..
What is Work?

Whenever you hear the word

WORK, What idea do you think
about?..
Well, Work has many meanings.
Like WHAT WORK ARE YOU
DOING?.
But in Physics WORK is an
abstract idea related to energy.

In order to say that work is done

on an object, there must be force
applied to it and the object
moves in the direction of the
applied force.

FOR EXAMPLE:

When the object you push moves a

distance in the direction towards which
you are pushing it, it means WORK is
done.
If the force you exert does not make
the object move it means NO WORK is
done.

Work is done when the force

(F) applied to the object
causes the object to have
displacement (D) in the same
direction as the force applied.
The work done by a force can
be called or calculated as
W=Fd

Hence, the unit for work, W

W=Fd
Unit of work = unit of force x unit of displacement
Unit of work = N m
Unit of work = Nm or joules, J
Joule (J) is named after the Physicist
James Presscot Joule.
It is also a unit of energy. One (1) Joule is equal to
the work done or energy expended in applying
a force of one Newton through a distance of
one meter.

ENERGY

ENERGY
TWO TYPES OF ENERGY :
Kinetic Energy The energy of a
moving object is called energy of
motion or Kinetic Energy(KE).
It came from the Greek Word kinetos
Which means moving.
It quantifies the amount of work the
object can do because of its motion.
KE = unit of mass x unit of velocity

Potential Energy The energy of an

object above the ground is called
potential energy because it is a
stored energy.
There are two types of Potential
Energy:
Gravitational Potential Energy
Elastic Potential Energy.
W = PE = 1/2kx

POWER?

Power

In physics, power is the rate of doing

work. It is equivalent to an amount of
energy consumed per unit time.In the
SI system, the unit of power is thejoule
per second (J/s), known as thewattin
honour ofJames Watt, the eighteenthcentury developer of thesteam engine.

Power is the rate of doing work or the

rate of using energy. In equation :
P = w/t = e/t
P = Work/Time = Energy/Time
Watts Watts is named after James
Watts who was a Scottish inventor and
mechanical engineer known for his
improvements on steam engine
technology.

The Conversion of unit from

joules per second to watts is:

1 watt = 1joule/1 second.

Remember :

Work is done on an object when the force

applied to it covers a distance in the direction
of the applied force.
Work is a way of transferring energy.
When work is done by an object it loses
energy and when work is done on an object it
gains energy.
The energy of an object enables it to do work.
A moving object has energy called energy of
motion or kinetic energy.

An object above a specified level has

energy due to its position called
potential energy.
An elastic object that is stretched or
compressed or twisted has energy
called potential energy.
Power is the rate of doing work or the
rate of using energy.
