INTRODUCTION
Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings often have vertical platelike RC walls called Shear Walls in addition to slabs, beams
and columns.
Shear walls are vertical elements of the horizontal force
resisting system. Shear walls are constructed to counter the
effects of lateral load acting on a structure.
RC shear walls provide large strength and stiffness to
buildings in the direction of their orientation, which
significantly reduces lateral sway of the building.

2/3/16

OBJECTIVES
To study the effect on stiffness of building with and without
shear wall.
To study the effect on natural frequency of building with and
without shear wall.

2/3/16

PROBLEM STATEMENT
To find the effect of shear wall on stiffness and natural
frequency of G+3 building
Preliminary data:-

2/3/16

ANALYSIS
A)calculate stiffness and natural frequency of G+3 storey
building without shear wall

Fig. No.1-Plan of G+3 storey building without shear wall

ANALYSIS CONTINUED

Fig. No.2-Elevation of G+3 storey building without shear wall

Step1:-Find mass at each roof level of storey.

A)At top roof level

1.Weight of slab = 12x18x0.2x25 = 1080 KN
2. Weight of beam = (4x18x0.25x0.5x25)+(4x12x0.25x0.5x25) = 375 KN
3.Weight of wall = (12x6x0.23x18x3.5/2)+(12x4x0.23x18x3.5/2) = 870 KN
4.Weight of column = 16x0.45x0.45x25x3.5/2 = 142 KN
5.Live load = 0

ANALYSIS CONTINUED
B)At Ground,1st and 2nd floor roof level
1. Weight of slab =1080 KN
2. Weight of beam =375 KN
3.Weight of wall = 1740 KN
4.Weight of column =284 KN
5.Live load =3.5 x 0.5 x18x12 = 378 KN

Step 2 :-Find stiffness of storey .

B) Stiffness of infill wall.
Stiffness of infill wall is determined by modeling the infill as an equivalent diagonal
strut method

Fig. No.3- Equivalent diagonal strut

Width of strut is given by

Where l and h are

given as

And

2/3/16

Where,
h = height of masonry infill panel.
L = length of infill panel.
t = thickness of infill panel and equivalent strut.
Ef = modulus of elasticity of frame material.
Em = modulus of elasticity of infill material.
Ic = moment of inertia of column.
Ib = moment of inertia of beam.

aspect
ratio, radians.
l = Length of contact between wall and beam.
h = Length of contact between wall and column.

ANALYSIS CONTINUED
MI of column = = 3.42 x 10-3 m4
MI of beam = = 2.60 X 10-3 m4

= tan-1(3.5/4) = 41.19

h =
h = 0.67 m

l =
l = 1.754 m

Therefore, width of strut is

W=
= 0.93 m

ANALYSIS CONTINUED
Now, A is the c/s area of the strut
A=WXt
= 0.93 X 0.23
= 0.2185 m2
Therefore Diagonal length of strut is Ld =
=
=5.32 m
Therefore stiffness of infill is
=
=
= 321 X 103 KN/m
2/3/16

ANALYSIS CONTINUED
For one frame with 3 bays there are three struts
participating in one direction
Therefore total stiffness of one frame is
= 3 x 321 x 103 + 4 x 21386
=1.049 x 106 kn/m
Hence, total stiffnesss of one storey is
=4 x 1.049 x 106
=4.2 x 106 KN/m
Therefore,
K1 =K2=K3=K4=4.2 x 106 KN/m
Step 3 : Find natural frequncy of building

For the above stiffness and mass matrix eigenvalue and
eigenvector are worked out as follows.

=[K-MW2]
Assume w2 = A

By solving that matrix we get

A1= 1519
W1=39 rad/sec
A2=12329
W2=111.036 rad/sec
A3=27720
W3=166.49 rad/sec

Therefore, Stiffness of end frame is
=4 x 0.021386 x 106 +2 x 0.321 x 106
+10 x 106
=10.74 x 106 KN/m
Stiffness of middle frame is
=4 x0.021386 x 106 + 3x 0.321 x 106
=1.04 x 106 KN/m
Hence, total stiffness of one storey is

Therefore,
