REPORTING OF ASSESSMENT
DATA

REPORTING OF ASSESSMENT DATA

TSL3112

Why report?
an important task reporting the assessment
results to various stakeholders so that their
needs for information are met and they have a
clear understanding of the assessment.
assessment reports can help build support for
schools and for initiatives that educators wish
to carry out
If poorly reported they can be disregarded or
interpreted incorrectly, adversely affecting
students, educators, and others in the school
community

PURPOSES OF REPORTING
ASSESSMENT DATA
To

TSL3112

recognize, acknowledge and give credit

for what students have achieved
To contribute to students personal
development and progress
To assist schools and the system in
identifying the potentials of their students

PURPOSES OF REPORTING
Accurate

TSL3112

and useful reporting

enables teachers, students and the
public to understand
why various assessment
instruments are being applied
how the results will be used as
part of the school improvement
process

TSL3112

To meet this goal, educators involved in

reporting assessment results should:
i. Determine the specific goals of the reporting
activities
ii. Select reporting strategies
iii. Communicate student assessment results in
a clear and accurate manner to students,
parents and the public
iv. Report results at a level of understanding
appropriate for the group or individual
receiving the report

When preparing to write assessment

reports, educators should:
Determine

TSL3112

how individual, group, and

school results of various tests will help
the school to improve instruction and
learning.

Determine

the audience for the reporting

activity students, parents, the school
board, or the public
6

When preparing to write assessment

reports, educators should:

Be clear aboutwhyassessment results

should be reported to these audiences.

TSL3112

Be equally clear about what information is

to be communicated, for what purposes,
and using which reporting techniques.
Multiple strategies are likely to be more
effective.
7

Educators

TSL3112

have several options when

preparing reports:
Reports can be provided in person, in
writing, or in both forms.
Reports can be primarily text-based,
graphical, or both.
Reports can be lengthy and elaborate,
or brief and straightforward.

AN EXAMPLE OF PERFORMANCE
SUMMARY
Victorian Government School Performance Summary
aims to provide parents a clear overview of how
government schools are performing in Victoria. Each
performance summary provides:
overall results of students and how the school
compares with other schools
student outcome results for the latest school year, as
well as the last four years (when available) as well as
a detailed breakdown of the areas that were measured
school comparison data to other schools, that
identifies whether a school (taking into account its
students) is performing higher than, lower than, or
broadly similar to other schools.

SUMMING UP:
The effectiveness of the entire reporting process
will be greatly hindered if the school or district
makes no effective use of the assessment
information.
If teachers, administrators and parents do not
learn from and act upon the information provided
by the assessments, the entire process will be of
little or no benefit to the children.
REMEMBER : the ultimate goal of
assessment is to better educate
children.
