Safe and clean water to the families

living in rural Indian communities

India- 16% of world population

Less than 3% fresh water in India

Buying and selling of water A common practice

Walk about 6-7 km per day to fetch drinking water

Cannot give proper attention to important issues like health and education

To change this grim and dry landscape of their lives Indian oil came up with a
program to provide safe and clean water to the families living in rural Indian
communities

Concentrated on providing clean portable water to 10 villages of Rajasthan

and 5 villages of Gujarat.

TERI the energy and resource institute had done a survey for Indian oil
Drinking water management for sustainable development in the villages near
plants of IOCl in Gujarat and Rajasthan.

Its a well-known research organization

From this survey Indian oils intervention for drinking water was carried out

Technical and socio-economic assessment, focused group discussion and

interviews helped to identify the problems and distinctive issues in each
village

Indian oil has joined hands with 4

different NGOs

Community participation and involvement of ngos in both states provided the

required inputs to the water supply for every house hold in the villages.

Through ngos interaction and training, water user group or paani sameeti has
been formed in the villages.

It empowered the beneficiaries to understand the process and manage their

own funds.

The idea was that the responsibilities will bring a sense of ownership among
villagers and make contribution towards sustainability of the programme.

Construction of water pipelines to connect households and stand posts carried

out in villages like Bar, Dabich, kriparampura, dhasook, magri, mavashiya in
Rajasthan and Naliya timbo, mota tavariya in Gujarat.

In dhouliya and padarla village in rajashtan construction of bore wells and

water storage tanks and stand posts helped the habitants to get water at
their door steps.

In Ramgarh village of rajashtan roof top rain water harvesting units were
installed in 5 govt. buildings including schools which is providing pure drinking
water to the school. Same efforts were replicated in moti pipli village school
in gujarat.

Before the water is supplied to village the water from the overhead tank is
purified by online bacterial disinfection unit.

According to WHO water distribution system should make drinking water

available to people within a distance of 1km and Indian oil made sure that
water reaches peoples courtyard or within easy reach at community tap
points.
