Benefits

Group work

Why sustainability?
Worldly Concern:
Industrial revolution lead to incalculable technological achievements, population
growth and corresponding increase in resource use.

Side effects of it

Rise in temperatures, global warming.

Rising cost of energy due to resource depletion
Growing environmental concerns (rising sea level,
global CO2 emission, depletion of ozone layer etc)
Demand for natural resources such as oil, wood and
water
Increase in the world population = increase in the
demand for resources
Pollution
Deforestation

As Winston Churchill once said,

We shape our buildings and

afterwards, our buildings shape us

Why sustainability?
a built environment accountable towards sustainability as
buildings have a significant impact on the environment
lets understand how

Buildings accounting for

One sixth of the worlds fresh water withdrawals
Air quality
Landfills
Depletion of ground cover
Cutting of trees
Soil erosion due to change in land use
Transportation patterns of communities

Hence Green understanding is

Required

Buildings consume energy like never

before

Buildings are the third largest consumers of

energy

Lets understand GREEN BUILDING?

There is no single definition
It can be loosely defined as one in which all of the
materials and systems are designed with an emphasis on
their integration into a whole, for the purpose of
minimizing their impacts on the occupants(indoor
environmental quality) and on the globe(Co2 emission).

Simplistically
Green refers to a method of design and construction
that minimizes burdens on our natural resources and
the environment.

Lets understand GREEN BUILDING?

A building which adopts the best practices of
environmental technology for optimizing the use of
natural resources for providing the clean and cost
effective working ambience is known as green building.
Lets break it down, green building stands for
best practices of environmental technology e.g. recyclable
materials, water efficiency, use of renewable resources,
renewable energy supply.
Optimizing the use of natural resources, preserving for the
future etc.
Clean and cost effective working ambience i.e. using
smart devices conservation of energy

Lets understand GREEN BUILDING?

Elements of green building design
1. Building siting
2. Building orientation
3. Material selection
4. Energy efficiency
5. Water conservation
6. Construction waste management
7. Indoor air quality

Building Siting
Easy access,
Advantage of a mass transit i.e. public transport
Site responsiveness is encouraged, sensitive to the
place
Brownfield site etc.
Protect and retain existing landscape and natural
features.

Energy Efficiency
Use of renewal energy sources such as wind, solar.
Passive design for ventilation
High efficiency lighting system
Dimmable lighting control
Properly sized, energy efficient heating/cooling
system
Interior colors and finishing
Use of photovoltaic cells
Effective use of computer modeling i.e. energy
calculations

Material Selection
Selecting sustainable construction materials and
products on the basis of several characteristics such
as
Reused and recycled content e.g. using demolition
materials as a base course for a parking lot keeps material out
of landfills

Zero or low toxicity

High recyclability
Durability, longevity and local production
Such products helps promote market for recycled materials.

Use of dimensional planning and material efficiency

strategies (e.g. 4 foot multiples).
Design with adequate space to incorporate recycle
collection point, waste management program .

Water Efficiency
Duel plumbing e.g. to use recycled water for toilet flushing
or a grey water system that recovers rainwater or other non
potable water for site irrigation.

Minimize wastewater by using ultra low flush toilets,

low flow shower heads and other water conserving
fixtures.
Meter the landscape separately from buildings to
check water
Rain water harvesting
Use of irrigation controllers and self closing nozzles on
hoses.

Indoor Air Quality

Environmental quality reduces respiratory disease.
Construction materials and interior finishes zero or low
emission.
Building materials and its cleaning produces toxic gases.
Heating and cooling system = +ve impact on indoor air
quality.
Adequate ventilation and proper filtration system
Use of material resistant to microbial growth.
Install ventilation in bathrooms.
Keep a check on humidity

BUILDING ORIENTATION
SITE SPECIFIC ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
Building orientation depending on direction of wind and
sun.
The building design should be as responsive to the site as
possible. This promotes harmony in nature with
surrounding local flora and fauna.
The building should be a low impact development causing
as little effect as possible to the site and the surrounding
milieu.
LANDSCAPE AS A ROOF COVER
CO2 emission in the atmosphere
Thermal radiation
Water runoff from the roof thereby conserving rainwater

my

GREEN BUILDING

Construction Strategy
Locally available, renewable and durable building
materials
Use of precast, prefab units with steel column sections.
Water Conservation
Rain water harvesting
Grey water recycling
Reduction of water use
Space allocation

my

GREEN BUILDING

Wind Turbines- USE IT

Photovoltaic Cells Installed in the south facade

Nonpolluting and need only reasonable sun light.
100% UV radiation reduction
Reduce the emission of CO2 into the atmosphere

my

GREEN BUILDING

NOISE REDUCTION
Buffer zone, heavy plantation

TRANSPORTATION

GREEN BUILDING benefits

Streamline permitting and approval
Reduced material use
Reduced infrastructure costs
Savings in construction waste disposal
Lower energy costs
Lower water costs
Greater durability and fewer repairs
Reduced cleaning and maintenance
