Deviations From Standards

Deviations from Drilling Design Standards

Requires review & approval by designated authority

Rational for decision must be documented
Approval authority is pre-defined in OIMS manual
Process for formal review must be in place

Approval authority
BOP stack arrangements - Drilling Operations
Manager with notice to Drilling Technical Manager
All other issues - Field Drilling Manager

5-Surface Well Control Equipment Policy & Procedures

Diverter Policy

Mandatory when:
offshore and no BOP nippled up
onshore if shallow gas expected

Minimum WP:
200 psi (land rigs)
300 psi (offshore, barge)

Minimum line diameter:

10 offshore ( 2 lines)
6 land ( 1 line OK)

Flow Line

Closing times:

Tank Line Valve

Diverter Line

Full-Opening Valves
(automatically opens when
diverter closes). Gate valves
ok. Ball valves are best. No
guillotine valves allowed.

Diverters

Used while drilling top hole

Diverts flow from rig rather

than shut-in

Platform, Land and Floating

drilling applications

Always follow OIMS Policy

Follow Regulatory Requirements

Always comply with local laws/regulations

Follow the EM BOP WC Equipment Manual

Follow API Practices where OIMS silent

Use API Specifications where possible

Use sound engineering & judgement when seeking

exceptions

Additional General Musts

Manual gate & HCV valve on choke line

Place HCV on the outside. Change to
Standards and Operational Practices
Keep drill pipe safety valve (stabbing valve)
on rig floor; one for each pipe size
Keep cross over from casing to drill pipe on
rig floor when running casing
When in doubt, check BOPE manual
