EPCs
 To boost exports and facilitate Indian exporters better, the
Government of India manages various EPCs
 The basic purpose of councils is to promote and develop
exports of the country
 The Export Promotion Councils perform both advisory and
executive functions
 Each council is responsible for the promotion of a particular
group of products, projects and services
 There are at present 22 EPCs in India

Functioning and Controlling
of EPCs
 All the EPCs are functioning and controlling
under following Ministries:
– 12 EPCs under Ministry of Commerce
– 9 EPCs under Ministry of Textile
– 1 EPC under Department of Information
Technology, Ministry of Communication
and Information Technology

 These Councils are registered as non-profit
organizations under the Companies Act/Societies
Registration Act
 These Councils are also the registering authorities
under the Export Import Policy, 1997-2002

Functions of EPCs
 Providing commercially useful information and
assistance to their members in developing and
increasing their exports
 Offering professional advice to members in different
areas such as technology up gradation, quality and
design improvement, standards and specifications,
product development, innovation etc.
 Organizing visits of delegations of members abroad to
explore foreign market opportunities
 Organizing participation in trade fairs, exhibitions and
buyer-seller meets in India

 Promoting interaction between the exporting
community and the government, both at the
Central and State levels
 Building a statistical base and providing
data on exports and imports of the country,
of their members and other relevant
international trade data

Membership of EPCs
 Exporters must apply to the concerned EPC
for membership in the prescribed application
form with requisite fee amount
 After that they will be enrolled as members
and granted a Registration-cum-Membership
Certificate (RCMC) of the EPC concerned
 The RCMC entitles the exporter to avail the
various facilities provided by EPC
 This is also required to claim export incentives

Engineering Export Promotion
Council
 It was established in 1955 under the
sponsorship of Ministry of Commerce
 It does export promotion of engineering
goods, projects and services from India
 It is one of the largest stakeholders in
the total exports out of India

Activities of EEPC
 Publicity and promoting the “Made in India” brand
– Council highlights the industrial image of India
through screening of its film entitled “Made in India”
at various seminars, buyer-seller meet and
international exhibitions
– It distributes the film amongst Chambers of
Commerce and Trade Association both in India and
abroad
– It brings out product-specific catalogues on a regular
basis highlighting the major manufactures of
products, standards and other details in order to
instill confidence amongst buyers of Indian products

 Organizing INDEE/INDIATECH exhibition
– To enhance market for Indian engineers EEPC
organizes the wholly Indian engineering exhibition,
known as INDEE/INDIATECH
– The first series of exhibitions took place in
Singapore, Jakarta and Bangkok

 Participation in leading exhibitions and trade
fairs
– The EEPC regularly organizes country
participation in specialized overseas trade
fairs like International Hardware Fair (IHF)
in Cologne, Spring fain in Birmingham,
National Hardware Fair in Chicago by
setting up information booths

 Seminars and Conferences
– The council regularly conducts seminars
and conferences to boost exports
– The most recent of such conferences like
Euro-India conference, Afro-India, Indo-
Lac, Indo-NAFTA were organized for
providing international platforms to Indian
exporters

 Trade delegations and buyer-seller meet
– The council is a regular sponsor of visits
of multi-product trade delegations to
identified market overseas to foster closer
cooperation to promote joint ventures and
strategic alliances abroad

 Trade informatics division (TID)
– The council has a TID with servers in
New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai
to provide a single source of detailed
information on the council’s members,
planned activities, trade data, trade
enquiries etc.

 The India Engineering Center
– The India Engineering Center (IEC) has been set
up by the EEPC under the market access
initiative scheme by the Ministry of Commerce
and Industry, GOI
– IEC is a multi-purpose outlet, which provides
facilities like showroom, warehousing,
distribution and marketing support to
participating Indian engineering organizations

 Export related services to members
– The EEPC offers a number of services to its member
such as
 Issues related policy and procedures for exports

 Timely availability of finance

 Information related to trends and opportunities in


international market
 Professional advice in areas like technology up
gradation, quality and design improvement etc.

Advantages of EPCs
 Act as a dynamic vehicle and trusted line between
Indian exporters and foreign buyers
 Identify suitable suppliers in India who are able to cater
to goods and services conforming to the buyer’s needs
 Provide supplier’s profile and status on request
 Acquaints overseas buyers with business climate and
policies prevailing in India
 Help in amicable settlement of trade disputes

Difference Between EPCs and CBs

 Commodity Boards look after the export promotion of primary


and traditional items of exports while Export Promotion
Councils look after the export promotion of non-traditional
items like engineering goods, computers, chemicals, etc. with
promising export potential.
 EPCs are concerned only with the promotion of exports of their
respective products; the scope of Commodity Boards is much
broader. The functions of Commodity Boards also encompass
the development and production of the respective commodity
and domestic marketing.

Coffee Board
 Coffee board is a autonomous body,
functioning under Ministry of Commerce and
Industry
 It was set up under the Coffee Act 1942
 The head office of the Coffee Board is
located in Bangalore
 It focuses on research and development,
extension, quality up-gradation, market
information and domestic and external
promotion of Indian coffee

Its main functions are:
 Promoting consumption of Indian coffee in India
and abroad
 Promoting agricultural and technological research in
the interest of Indian coffee industry
 Providing commercially useful information and

 Organizing visits of delegations of its members

 Organizing participation in trade fairs exhibitions

Export Development Authorities
(EDA)
 There are two export development authorities in
India
– The Marine Products Export Development
Authority (MPEDA)
– The Agricultural And Processed Food Products
Export Development Authority (APEDA)

Federation of Indian Export
Organization (FIEO)
 It was set up jointly by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of
India and private trade and industry in the year 1965
 FIEO is therefore a partner of the Government of India in
promoting India’s export
 The Head Office of FIEO is located in New Delhi
 It is the only body authorized in India to register exporters not
covered under any other Export Promotion Council of India
 FIEO members representing large, medium & small scale
exporting units contribute more around 70% global exports of our
country
 It has 12991 members as on 31st March 2008

Activities of FIEO
 Export Promotion Activities
– FIEO organizes various activities like seminars,
workshops, open house meets, buyer-seller meets and
exchanging business delegations etc.
 Market Development Assistance
– Market Development Assistance (MDA) Scheme is
under operation through the Department of Commerce,
Government of India to assist exporters for export
promotion activities abroad. The federation is one of
the agencies nominated by the Government of India for
processing applications and also disbursing grants.
Eligible exporters can avail MDA as per the MDA
Guidelines

 Certificate of Origin
– Certificate of Origin is required by most countries
to establish proof of origin of the goods being
imported by them. FIEO has been authorized to
issue Certificate of Origin under SAPTA and
BANGKOK Agreement
 Taking up issues/Problems of members
– FIEO takes up problems of members relating to
Foreign Trade Policy, Banking, Income Tax,
Customs, Central Excise etc with policy makers in
the Government’s various Departments/ Ministries

 Live chat with members
– Members can chat live with Director General FIEO on
every Wednesday from 3.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. and
seek clarifications/advices on any matter relating to
foreign trade
 Awards to members and export facilitators
– FIEO gives away annual export awards “Niryat
Shree” to its members for their outstanding export
performances. FIEO also gives away “Niryat Bandhu”
awards to export facilitators such as banks, export
promotion councils and commodity boards for
recognizing their support to the exporting community

 Disseminating commercial intelligence
– FIEO brings out a monthly bulletin ‘FIEO News’ to keep its
members updated with policy changes, changing market
trends, upcoming export opportunities etc. FIEO News is
circulated among all the members free of cost. It is also
available on its website

 Setting up warehouse at various trade centers overseas


– FIEO is planning to set up warehouses/India Trade Centers in
various countries in the near future which can serve as the
gateway of its members’ export to these countries. The trade
centers will have permanent display galleries for showcasing
the products
