Useful phrases

At all
at all is a negative particle, so its usually
used in negative sentences.
I dont like your house at all
(no me gusta tu casa para nada/en absoluto)
If you are a man at all, you should be brave
enough to do it
(si acaso eres un hombre / si es que eres un
hombre)

By chance
By chance means por casualidad
I saw him at the library by chance
If, by chance, you run into him, tell him to
call me, please.
We can also use the construction happen
to, which means the same thing as by
chance.
If you happen to see him, kick his ass for me,
please.

Enough
The adverb enough is used with other
adverbs that modify the whole sentence
rather than the verb. We dont usually
translate it in Spanish

At once
At once is a useful phrase to use when
were trying to translate en seguida
Come here at once!
We got down to working at once (nos pusimos
a trabajar en seguida)
We can also use other phrases such as
right away, (informal) immediately
(standard) or forthwith (formal)

Little by little
The phrase little by little means poco a
poco and is used in informal contexts.
Im learning English little by little
If we are to use poco a poco in an essay, we
will use gradually, as this is a more formal
phrase.

Again and again

Again and again means una y otra
vez
My mother tells me to make my bed
again and again
He suggested throwing a party again
and again (he insisted on throwing)

The other way round

The other way round means al revs.
If you fail to do it that way, try doing it the
other way round
We have three more phrases to translate al

He put on his shirt inside out (del revs)

Just for fun

Just for fun means por diversin, como
entrenimiento, por gusto
Im learning English just for fun
Im reading The Lord of the Rings just for fun

For the sake of

for the sake of means something along the
lines of por el bien de, but we use different
expressions to translate it into Spanish
For the sake of the old people = por los
ancianos
Art for arts sake = el arte por el arte
For gods sake! = por el amor de dios!
For old times sake = Por los viejos tiempos
For the sake of peace = En pro de la paz
I believe in education for its own sake = Creo
en el valor de la educacin (por s misma)

Just in case
just in case means por si acaso.
I will do my homework just in case
I will ask him about it, just in case he has a
different opinion
In case doesnt mean en caso de que, but
por si (acaso). So in case is no the same as
if.
I will start saving money, in case I feel like buying
something exprensive
