A MiCOM Alstom P740 scheme supports a maximum of:

up to 28 Peripheral Units,
up to 8 zones (with or without SDEF),
up to 28 feeders.

Architecture can be either distributed, centralised or mixed

Architecture
The MiCOM Alstom P740 scheme is made of:
P741 - Central Unit (CU),
Gathers and processes the measurements from the
PUs with Ethernet board slot, hotkeys & function
keys and tricolour LEDs
(comprises all differential protection algorithms)

P742 - Peripheral Unit (PU),


Measures and trips with hotkeys
(CT saturation detection, local non-directional
overcurrent, local circuit breaker failure protection
and Dead Zone protection)

P743 - Peripheral Unit (PU),


same as P742 but with additional opto inputs, relay
output and Ethernet board slot, hotkeys & function
keys and tricolour LEDs

Circuitry fault detection

MiCOM Alstom P740 Central Unit: Trip Logic


CU Tripping Logic decisions (for Zone and Check Zone):

Instantaneous Algorithm:
If 2 consecutive samples verify tripping condition
(are above
(ID>2) and k x Ibias) AND no CT
Saturation detected
Delayed Algorithm*:
If all samples verify tripping condition (are all above
(ID>2) and k x IBias) during 5.8 ms AND at least one
sample does not verify it in the previous 3.3 ms AND at
least one sample verified it in the previous 4,2 ms (i.e. an
internal fault is detected if a differential current is
detected on 2 consecutive half-periods)

*: never affected by the CT saturation blocking information.

Circuitry fault criterion with slope : alarm when Idiff is
greater than ID>1 and greater than slope k1.Ibias
One set of parameters for check zone element and an
other one for all the zones (ID>2, k2, IDN>2, kN)
Single setting for IbiasPh> and circuitry fault
supervision (ID>1, IDN>1, and timers) for all zones
and check zone elements
Slopes start from 0 (Is = 0)

Trip Logic in CU
CU Tripping Logic decisions (for Zone and Check Zone):

2 Levels of maintenance in the CU:
87BB trip blocked but 50BF (back trip) enable
(level 1)
87BB and 50BF trip blocked (level 2)

Its a per zone selection

Additional maintenance features selectable via
hotkey, function key or opto-coupler:
All the protections (87BB, Dead Zone, General
50BF, Local 50BF, O/C) disabled
