Chapter 4
Atomic Structure
4.1 Defining the Atom
4.2 Structure of the Nuclear Atom
Atomic Number
Elements are different because
they contain different numbers of
protons.
An elements atomic number is the
number of protons in the nucleus of an
atom of that element.

Atomic Number
Remember that atoms are electrically
neutral.
Thus, the number of electrons (negatively
charged particles) must equal the number
of protons (positively charged particles).
Mass Number
The total number of protons and
neutrons in an atom is called the mass
number.
10
Mass Number
If you know the atomic number and
mass number of an atom of any
element, you can determine the atoms
composition.
The number of neutrons in an atom is the
difference between the mass number and
atomic number.
11
Mass Number
If you know the atomic number and
mass number of an atom of any
element, you can determine the atoms
composition.
Number of neutrons = mass number atomic number
12
Mass Number
The composition of any
atom can be represented
in shorthand notation
using atomic number and
mass number.
Au is the
chemical
symbol for
gold.
Mass Number
You can also refer to
atoms by using the mass
number and the name of
the element.
