it takes around 3 years to earn back the cost of the
degree.

TOPIC 2

2(A)
DEFINE PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND AND PRICE
ELASTICITY OF SUPPLY.

Price Elasticity of Demand

a measure of the relationship between a

change in the quantity demanded of a
particular good and a change in its price.

Price Elasticity of Supply

a measure to show the responsiveness, or

elasticity, of the quantity supplied of a good
or service to a change in its price.

2(B)
STATE THE FORMULAS FOR
CALCULATING THE PRICE
ELASTICITY OF DEMAND AND PRICE
ELASTICITY OF SUPPLY.

Price Elasticity of Demand

Price Elasticity of Supply

2(C)
USING NUMERICAL EXAMPLES,
SHOW HOW YOU CALCULATE THE
PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND
AND PRICE ELASTICITY OF SUPPLY.

Price Elasticity of Demand

If the price of petrol increased from $130 to $140
and demand fell from 10,000 units to 9,900.

% change in quantity demanded

= -100/10 000 X 100%
= -1%
% change in price
= 10/130 X 100%
=7.7%
Therefore, Price Elasticity of Demand
= -1/7.7
=-0.13

Price Elasticity of Supply

When the price of a bottle of ink changes from $5
to $6 and the quantity supplied changes from 20
units per supplier per week to 30 units per
supplier per week.
% change in quantity supplied
= 10/20 X 100%
= 50%
% change in price
= 1/5 X 100%
= 20%
Therefore, Price Elasticity of supply
= 50/20
= 2.50

2(D)
SHOW BY WAY GRAPHS;
-PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND EQUALS
1, GREATER THAN 1 AND LESS THAN 1.
-PRICE ELASTICITY OF SUPPLY EQUALS 1,
GREATER THAN 1 AND LESS THAN 1.

PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND = 1

PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND > 1

PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND < 1

PRICE ELASTICITY OF SUPPLY = 1

PRICE ELASTICITY OF SUPPLY > 1

PRICE ELASTICITY OF DEMAND < 1
