GRAMMAR TOPIC : Past Tense
There are Regular and Irregular verbs
in the Simple Past Tense.
Tense

Add “ED” to the end of regular verbs.


Ex

: THEY PLAYED LAST NIGHT

Rules for the use of ED
1- For verbs in E we just add “D”.

Ex: THEY DANCED YESTERDAY

2- For verbs ending in Y preceded by a
consonant, we cut the “Y” and add “IED”.

Use “Did” to make questions in
the Simple Past Tense.

Use “Didn’t” to make
Negative sentences in the
Past .

She Didn’t sleep last night


Present Perfect Tense
Formed by:
HAVE (Has) + Past Participle of a verb
Ex: I HAVE TRAVELED A LOT LATELY
SHE HAS STUDIED FOR THE TESTS EVERY NIGHT.
PS: This tense expresses the idea that something
happened and the time of the action is not
specified or important. Or to describe
something that never happened.
Ex: I HAVE NEVER STUDIED FRENCH.
PAST PARTICIPLES
It’s very easy to understand and
memorize the past participles of regular
verbs: They’re usually the same as the
Simple Past form.
SHE HAS STUDIED A LOT LATELY.

IRREGULAR PAST
PARTICIPLES
Just like the irregular verbs, their forms in
the past participles are usually different. We
have to memorize and work with them as
much as we can.
To Ride – Rode - Ridden

I HAVE NEVER RIDDEN A CAMEL


EVER?
EVER: Used in interrogative statements
asking if the action has happened.

(Usually uncommon questions)


EX:

HAVE YOU EVER TRAVELED BY PLANE?


We use “EVER” to make unusual
questions in the present perfect:

PAY ATTENTION:
Have you EVER seen a ghost?

PS: This tense expresses the idea that the action
began some time ago and it’s still
happening (The action is in
progress).
