MASS MEDIA
Mass media for the masses to communicate something is

known as mass media.


The mass media can be of great help in orienting and

retraining a large number of teachers simultaneously in the


new pedagogy and content of teaching.
T.V and Radio are two different mass media that can be used

successfully for the spread of formal education

EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION

Television is being used for educational purposes in


our country for the last about 30 years.
First it was used in schools of Delhi in 1961.

Later the scheme was taken up by Doordarshan


Kendras.
The first attempt to use T.V on a mass scale was made
by using an American Satellite in 1975 - 76 during
SITE.
Wayne Coy calls educational television as the
electronic blackboard of the future

Closed Circuit Television.

TYPES OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMES


Demonstration Type
Supplementary Type
Direct Teaching Programmes.

ADVANTAGES
It provides common experience to all students

when they see the same basic ideas on television.


It directs the attention of the student to the exact
detail of object.
It makes quick and rural impressions which can
often reduce the time necessary to teach an idea.
It saves time, effort and cost of setting up
classroom projection equipment.
It permits inclusion f up to date information,
modifications into the classroom.

LIMITATIONS
The medium is limited to one way

communication from teacher to


students
the total cost of television is more
than normal classroom instruction
T.V lessons may not suit the school
timings
T.V lessons are not flexible
Instruction through T.V is not child
centered

RADIO

According to R.G
Raynolds, radio is the most
significant medium for
education. As a supplement to
classroom teaching, its
possibilities are almost
unlimited. It is available from
early morning till long after
midnight.

Radio is not an addition to


education. Radio is something
to be placed on the top of
education.

LIMITATIONS
Radio broadcast is a one way

communication
It depends on the sense of hearing.
It becomes vey difficult to integrate
school programme with radio
broadcast.
The students have little opportunities
to participate in the instructional
activity.
