Indie Pop

Indie pop originated in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s and is a genre of
alternative rock music. Indie pop was inspired by punk's DIY ethic, and it
developed a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Indie pop is
different to indie rock in the way that it is more melodic and less abrasive.
"Indie" was used for some time to describe artists on independent labels and
who were running the labels themselves. Indie music was also a genre whose
defining conventions were identified as jangling guitars, a love of '60s pop, and
melodic power pop song structures

Alternative/Indie rock
Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the UK in the
mid-1980s and the term indie means that the genre was based on an
independent group of people. Alternative rock music came out from the
independent music underground of the 1980s and became widely popular by
the 1990s. The word alternative suggests the genre has escaped typical
conventions of mainstream rock music and and created an original genre with
characters that have a laid back and cool attitude.

History of Indie Pop

Indie pop can be traced back to the post-punk explosion and and small shopbased record labels such as London's Rough Trade Records and Glasgow's
Postcard Records.
Indie pop originated in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s and was criticized
for its associations with shambling" and underachievement, but the C86 indie
pop scene is now recognized as independent music in the UK and inspires
musicians around the world, with new bands, labels and clubs devoted to the
sound.
Around the 1990s, Indie Pop began to gain a following in the United States of
America. Key Indie Pop bands popped up thanks to this, including Beat
Happening and The Magnetic Fields, and labels specializing in Indie Pop such
as K Records began to appear.

Artists/bands
Twenty One Pilots are an
American musical duo from
Columbus, Ohio. The band was
formed in 2009 and the members
are Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.
Twenty One Pilots bring a mix of
piano sometimes an electronic
keyboard, drums (also mixed with
electronic drums sometimes),
vocals, and occasionally ukulele.
Their songs are poetry-based
(written by Tyler and Josh), and
when his poetry is too long to fit in a
song he will rap the words.

The kooks are a self-described

"pop" band and their music is
originally influenced by the
1960s post-punk revival of the
new millennium. The band
currently consists of Luke
Pritchard (vocals/guitar), Hugh
Harris (lead guitar/synth),
Alexis Nunez (drums), and
Peter Denton (bass guitar).
They are a British rock band
formed in Brighton, East
Sussex in 2004.

Artists/bands
Bombay Bicycle Club, The Stone Roses and
ALT-J are also examples of indie pop bands.

C86 (album)
In 1986 C86 was released by the British music
magazine NME and is a cassette compilation
featuring new bands licensed from British
independent record labels of the time. The album
then evolved into a guitar-based musical genre
characterized by jangling guitars and melodic
power pop song structures.
The C86 scene is now recognized as an
important influence for the music genre and for
independent music in the UK,as was recognized
in the subtitle of the compilation's 2006 CD issue:
CD86: 48 Tracks from the Birth of Indie Pop.

Music videos
Indie pop music videos are know to be low-budget and their main settings seem
to be based in: studios, parks and woods. This type of scenes help the audience
focus on the artist and their performance.
Most Indie pop music videos are live performances from the artists which
encourages the audience to focus on the artist's actual ability and talent. Having
live performances in their videos also shows the audience what it would be like
to be at one of their gigs/shows and enables them to have a feel for the
atmosphere.
There tends to be a filter used over the top of the whole video (e.g black and
white) which can show different emotions of positive or negative feelings.

conventions
Often show live performances in their music videos to show that they are
doing what they love and that they are all about the music, not their
image.
Narrative videos are used to show a story throughout the video and hold
the audience's attention better.
Indie pop artists will dress the way they wish to dress, not what they think
will get them more media attention or popularity.
Diegetic sounds(source visible on the video and usually from an action)
are used in videos at the beginning or end to help set the scene and
sometimes make you feel like you are a part of the video. This may draw
the audience into the video, making them feel like a part in it and thus
may take more interest in it.

star qualities
Indie pop artists are often known as independent artists who typically play rock
instruments and are in a band. The singer will usually play his own instrument.
These type of artists have their own style but are also fashionable at the same
time. They also treat their music as part of their personality and show it in
their songs as it shows an audience that they are doing what they love.
