• The Teen drama genre typically abide by the conventions following American pop

culture.

• The conventions usually include: Alcohol, illegal substances, violence, high school,
parties, intimate relationships, social groups and cliques.

• In the first two minutes of our movie we chose to show what we thought were the
most familiar conventions such as relationships, social groups and cliques, as the
audience would automatically link them to the relevant conventions for this genre.

• The Teen drama genre also make use of binary oppositions, such as Good Vs Evil
and Law Vs Crime.

• Similarly, our movie uses the opposition Good Vs Evil, but does not touch upon the
aspect of Law Vs Crime.

• This is because the attitudes with the love triangle were central to the storyline,
however if law was brought into the plot, it would act as a distraction.
•When looking at the film in general, each character seems naive, as
they bombarded with ideas of “love”, and it is obvious that each
character’s relationship problems dominate their lives.

•Within this gang influenced social group, the male characters appear
dominant, taking control of the area they are in, or the people they are
around. For example Aaron and his girlfriend, Laura, This is illustrated
by the mockery texts that he sends to her.

•In addition, the young gang in our movie is based upon groups of
youngsters, that some may call ‘hood rats’ or ‘yobs’. This is shown
through the verisimilitude clothing, as the characters wore baggy
clothes with their hoods up, so their faces are covered.

•The fact that their faces are covered link to the idea of not being
identified by police or even rival gangs, if showing rude obnoxious
behaviour, similar to the behaviour of Aaron and his gang.
•Many media institutions cater for a variety of genres for example,
Momentum pictures, Pathé, Revolver entertainment, Hollywood
pictures, and 20th century fox.

•However, I found that Revolver Entertainment released a majority of

action/drama and adventure films, including Noel Clarke’s Kidulthood,
hence my belief that this institute would distribute ‘Street Crush’.

•Also, I found that other films (not necessarily films of the same genre)
issued by Revolver Entertainment had the same constituency and
target audience.

•Furthermore, Revolver entertainment is renowned for handling both

large scale, and smaller scale films with equal attentions, therefore I
trust that though our film was produced under low resources, they
would nonetheless sponsor the film.
•Although a majority of individuals are familiar with the
concepts of Teen drama movies, our research revealed that
those aged 15 to 25 enjoyed watching Teen Drama movies the
most, hence the target audience being young adults between
15-25.

•As well as the age the audience would be of any nationality,

but with the same social class and similar ideology. This is
purely because it is easier to interact with characters living in
similar communities, and who understand the routine of the
characters.

•Also, the target age had to be reasonably high as further into

the storyline, there are more scenes of violence, and strong
language.
•Since the characters are archetypes of their social group, this
would attract the attention of people who understand and can
relate to the social class, and social areas in general.

•Furthermore, the characters are young teens, therefore it

addresses the audience since the majority would share the same
age.

•The title of the film also had to be attracting, as it would give the
audience a first impression, hence the play on words in the title
‘Street Crush’. The word “crush” possesses two connotations
firstly, crush meaning smashed into pieces, and the second
meaning being admiration.

•Ps & Qs by Kano was used as the theme tune to the film, this is a
great attraction for the audience as it is an up to date song, which
many young adults enjoy listening to. Although not everyone will
like the song, I think that it is still effective as the beat is catchy.
However, not only is it an attraction it also mirrors the gang wars,
and relationships within our story line.
•When beginning to film, I felt positive using the camera,
however I did not have genuine experience filming.
However, after filming a number of scenes I feel extremely
confident with filming.
•It is evident that I am more familiar with using Mac
computes to upload takes, as I have learnt to:
• Crop clips
• Apply effects
• Apply Transitions
• Edit and Apply Sounds

•However, as well as the different skills that I have learnt

by using the Mac and Camera, I have also made use of
number of important equipment and resources, such as the
•Tripod
•Internet
•Tape.
When looking back on our preliminary task, I feel that my
familiarity with filmmaking has progressed. I realised that
during our preliminary task, our camera movement and
angles, and lighting techniques were limited. However,
know I have learnt the semiotics behind different camera
movements and angles, and I now understand that
different angles and shots bring a different atmosphere
into the scene. I believe that I also revised the 180
degrees line rule, and recognise it more than when the
preliminary task was filmed. Finally, my ideas have
definitely improved when thinking about the Mise-en-
scene, since again I understand the reality behind using
specific props and lighting shades. For example ‘Street
Crush’ uses mostly natural lights, giving the scene a
realistic sense, this allows the audience to feel more
involved as they can understand the rational storyline.
