ATEX 137 (1999/92/EC)

The Use Directive.

The HSE Implements ATEX 137.
The Dangerous Substances and
Explosive Atmospheres Regulations
2002 (DSEAR).
It is concerned with the Health and
Safety in the Workplace where
potentially explosive atmospheres
may be present.

CAT 1 - STORAGE OF
TECHNICAL FILE

If the equipment is to be used in a

Zone 0 environment, the
manufacturer must gain an EC Type
Examination and ATEX certificate
from a Notified Body, and Quality
Assurance issues apply.

29/09/15

18

CAT 2 - STORAGE OF
TECHNICAL FILE

For category 2 non-electrical

equipment, the completed technical
file must be submitted to a Notified
Body for their storage (for 10 years).
Please note that a Notified Body will
not review the file, they will just
store it.

19

CAT 3 - STORAGE OF
TECHNICAL FILE

If the equipment is only to be used in

a Zone 2 environment, the
manufacturer can declare compliance
(on completion and storage of the
technical file) and label the product
accordingly.
There is no legal requirement for the
technical file to be submitted to a
Notified Body in this case.
