CLOZE PASSAGE

What is it?
A cloze test (also cloze deletion test)
is an exercise, test, or assessment
consisting of a portion of text with
certain words removed, where the
participant is asked to replace the
missing words.

Example
Today, I went to the ________ and
bought some milk and eggs. I knew it
was going to rain, but I forgot to take
my ________, and ended up getting
wet on the way ________.

Using contextual clues


Different types of clues are used in making guesses from
contexts. The following are some examples:

a. The synonym clue: The word is explained by a synonym (word


with same meaning) used in the same sentence:

The story of the courageous men who


climbed Mount Everest will go down in the
history of fearless adventurers.
b. The experience clue:
Fish begins to deteriorate quickly if it is not
kept in a freezer.

C. The comparison-and-contrast clue, in which the opposite is


given in thesame sentence:
Although the natives appeared friendly, hostile
tribes were known to attack explorers.
D. The word-summary clue, in which the details preceding or
following theword explain the meaning:
The floors were washed, the furniture polished
and the curtains freshly laundered; the whole
house was in perfect condition for the new tenants.
E. The association clue: meaning is clarified through the

hues of happiness.
