Eigenvalues represent the
natural frequencies of a
system

the mode of these

Mechanics of materials:
the principle stresses are the
eigenvalues of the stress matrix, and
the principle directions are the
directions of the associated
eigenvectors. In quantum
mechanics, eigenvalues are
especially important.
