INTRODUCTION

What is Zigbee?
o Zigbee is a specification for small, low power radios
based on IEEE 802.15.4 2003 Wireless Personal Area
Networks standard.

o The specification was accepted and ratified by the Zigbee

alliance in December 2004. Zigbee Alliance is a group of
more than 300 companies including industry majors like
Philips, Mitsubishi Electric, Epson, Atmel, Texas
Instruments etc. which are committed towards
developing and promoting this standard.

o The alliance is responsible for publishing and maintaining

INTRODUCTION
o Technological Standards created for Control and Sensors
Networks
o Compared to other wireless protocols, the ZigBee wireless
protocol offers low complexity, reduced resource
requirements and most importantly, a standard set of
specifications.

IEEE 802.15
15th Working Group- WIRELESS PERSONAL AREA
NETWORKS(PAN)
TASKGROUP 1 is Bluetooth, 2 is Co-existence with
802.11, GROUP 3 is High-Rate WPAN, GROUP 4 is Low

ZigBee protocols are based on 802.15.4 task group
specifications approved in April 2003

Basic Network Characteristics

o Simpler Cheaper than Bluetooth
o Embedded Low Rate, Low Power Applications
o General Purpose, Cost Effective Mesh Networks for Industrial Control
o Mesh can have up to 65,536 nodes, but not interoperable with Infrared,
Bluetooth, other WPAN Equipment

APPLICATION
Zigbee protocol has been developed with the emphases on low cost battery
powered application such as consumer electronics, industrial automation,
home and building automation, PC peripherals, medical sensor applications,
toys and games.
Some of the major applications include:
Remote sensing: Water/sewage level monitoring, Temperature sensing.
Industrial and commercial : Monitor, control and automation links
Building automation : Security, light, thermostat, Air condition control
Heath care : Patient monitoring, data logger, remote diagnosis
Memory tagging : Automotive service record, maintenance logging,
inventory control/tracing.

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES

Zigbee is poised to become the global control/sensor network standard. It has been
designed to provide the following features:

Low power consumption

Low Cost
High Density of Nodes per Network
Simple Protocol, Global Interpretation

Disadvantages
Low transmission rate
Smaller range

CONCLUSION
It is likely that Zigbee will increasingly play a vital role in the future of computer
and communication technology.
Zigbee and underlying IEEE 802.15.4 communication technology could form
the basis of FUTURE WIRELESS SENSORS, Offering:
1.
2.
3.
4.

DATA RELIABILITY
LONG BATTERY
LOWER SYSTEM COST
GOOD RANGE AND FLEXIBLE NETWORK
