C. Questions
1.

A 35-year old diabetic is suspected

of developing renal insufficiency.
What type of urine collection will
be performed in this case? Why?

A 24-hour timed specimen is the type of urine

collection for this case because it checks the function
of the kidneys and detects the disease. Urine
samples are collected in one or more containers over
a period of 24 hours. The containers are kept in a
cool environment and then sent to a lab for analysis.

C. Questions
2. What special preparation will you
recommend for a pregnant women
subjected for urinalysis? Explain your
answer.
A clean-catch midstream specimen of
urine will be asked from a pregnant woman
subjected for analysis. It provides a
specimen that is less contaminated by
epithelial cells and bacteria and, therefore,
is more representative of the actual urine
than the routinely voided specimen.

2. What special preparation will you

recommend for a pregnant women
subjected for urinalysis? Explain your
answer.

Pregnant patients should separate the labia and

clean the urinary meatus and surrounding
area. When cleansing is complete, patients are to
void first into the toilet, then collect an adequate
amount of urine in the sterile container, and finish
voiding into the toilet. Care should be taken not
to contaminate the specimen container.

C. Questions
3. A 24-hour urine collection received
in the laboratory for creatinine
analysis has a volume of 500 mL.
a.)
Should
this
specimen
accepted? Why or why not?

be

No, the specimen should be analyzed and the

volume reported. Persons with decreased
glomerular filtration rates may also exhibit
oliguria.

C. Questions
3. A 24-hour urine collection received in
the laboratory for creatinine analysis
has a volume of 500 mL.
b.) State a possible source of error, if
the creatinine concentration per 24 hour
is abnormally low.
Failure to collect a complete specimen will
result in a low clearance rate not related to
renal function.

D. Conclusions/Reflection of
the Activity
Standard

procedure for collection of

urine should be followed to have
accurate and precise results. A simple
error can make the result inaccurate
and imprecise. There is a specific type
of urine collection to different cases/
tests.
