INTRODUCTION

The 3D displays have been classified into 4

groups
Stereoscopic displays
Auto stereoscopic displays
Volumetric displays
Holographic displays

Design and building of a low cost and practical

auto stereoscopic display is explained here.

CONTD...

Does not need to wear special glasses.

Uses eye tracking to give a large degree of

freedom to viewer movement

Spatial light modulation(SLM) is used

Stereo image pair is screened on the usual LCD

simultaneously but in different columns of pixels.

3D USING PARALLAX BARRIER

2 images are merged

to a single frame
Parallax barrier is used
It separate the vision of
the right and the left
One image is seen by
only one eye
This will make the seen
appear as 3D

ASSUMPTIONS

Users face is 70cm in front of the display

Distance between eyes is 6cm

The slot to pixel ratio is 1:5

Slot diameter is 0.245mm and distance between

the slots is 1.27mm

For making at least 1 pixel of parallax for user's

eyes, it is necessary to make a gap between the
LCD surface and the cloven mask.

Dept of ECE, MBCET

MAKING THE PARALLAX

BARRIER

A sheet of
transparent Plexiglas
with the thickness of
3mm is used

Using photo-plot
method mask is
plotted on a special
film

FACE TRACKING AND EYE

DETECTION SYSTEM

It consists of
o Automated initial face detection system
o Subsequent face tracking system
o Eye detecting method

The Face Tracking application performs real time

face tracking in a webcam.

After detecting face position, eyes are detected in

order to find out the proper offset for sub-pixels.

CREATING A 3D IMAGE FROM 2

IMAGES

A frame including both left and right images is

captured from the source

The position of the user's pupils will be calculated

The two images are combined into one frame

Every column of pixels from each image will be

side-by-side with the corresponding column from
the other image

Dept of ECE, MBCET

APPLYING THE OFFSET

ALGORITHM

The face detection algorithm outputs

an angle value between 90 and -90

By every 1.6 steps that the user

moves in a direction the system
slides the mixed image one sub-pixel
to the opposing direction

After displacing three steps, the

system moves the image two pixels
along the user's movement direction

After a displacement of six sub-pixels,

the system resets the image position
to its initial value.

DISADVANTAGES

The 3D display have decreased intensity

The resolution decreases to 1/5th of the original

Difficult to display large volume objects, which is

possible with volumetric display

CONCLUSION

Building of a low cost and practical stereoscopic

display that does not need to wear special
glasses has been presented

Position tracking gives a large degree of freedom

to viewers movement

Increasing the parallax accuracy using fade in

and fade out technique in sub pixels could be a
future work along this project
