INTRODUCTION
The AM detector is a device for detecting electrical
oscillations
mainly
used
in
broadcast,
communication, and television receivers and many
other units .
It is used to isolate the modulating frequencies of
information-carrying oscillations.
It has the ability to modulate a carrier wave in the
information.
Two type of detector ; Envelope detector/Diode
detector and Product detector.
Advantage
Disadvantage
Simplicity
Distortion
Low cost
Selective fading

Product detector
A product detector is a type of demodulator used for
AM and SSB signals, where the original carrier signal
is removed by multiplying the received signal with a
signal at the carrier frequency (or near to it).
It
converting the envelope of the signal into the
decoded waveform by rectification as an envelope
detector would, the product detector takes the product
of the modulated signal and a local oscillator.
Advantage
Can decode over
modulated AM and AM
with suppressed carrier.
Have a higher signal to
noise ratio than the same
signal demodulated with
an envelope detector.
Disadvantage
Needed to demodulate SSB
signals.
SIGNAL WAVEFORM
AND SPECTRUM
The modulated AM carrier wave is received by the antenna
of the radio receiver and is rectified by the action of a
detector diode.
Then the rectified signal passes through a low-pass filter to
respond to the high frequency of the AM carrier wave.
AM carriers are in the range 600 to 1400 kHz while the
signal frequency which modulates it is much lower, 0.02 to 5
kHz, and it can pass through the filter. The AM radio use the
process called heterodyning to shift the carrier frequency of
each radio station to a single frequency .

CONCLUSION
The function of an AM detector is to demodulate the AM
signal and recover or reproduce the original source
information.
The recovered signals contain the same frequencies as the
original information signal and have the same relative
amplitude characteristics.
The diode in the AM detector is act as rectification when
the input voltage exceeds the barrier potential of diode,
while the capacitor acts as filters.
When successive positive peaks of the detector input
waveform are increased the capacitors hold its charge
between the peaks, when it reverse, the capacitors
discharge between peaks to a value less than the next peak.
