NATURE BASED PROGRAMS IN

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Abstract

Environmental education has emerged as an


important tool to bridge the divide between man
and his natural environment as what we do with
the environment today effects the environment
tomorrow. It is clear that India does face many
environmental problems in different ways in various
parts of the country, and Nature based programs
are important in helping the masses understand the
importance of he environment where formal school
based environmental education does not exist. This
study is based on the publics perception of nature
based programs in environmental education.

Objective of Research

Nature based programs in the form of NGOs,


environmental programs and nature based
groups can add to the publics knowledge, and
play a very crucial role in environmental
education.
They target wide age-groups, communities and
different strata of society. At school level, they
can make a greater impact and can help identify
and nurture future environmentalists and
decision makers.
.In order for such programs to be successful, it is
important that the public participates and
responds well to it, which is why their perception

Research Methodology

The study was carried out using survey


questionnaire method. The analysis of the data
was carried out using qualitative analysis methods.

The steps carried out during this study were as


follows:

Intensive literature study was done to understand the


nature of the topic.
The research question was formulized after much
deliberation after comparing the known to unkown
facts.
A pilot questionnaire was sent out to the academic
group.

Research Methodology

Judging from the response, the second


questionnaire was circulated in the general
public.

The views from the questionnaire were


analyzed and observations were noted
down.

The final report was then complied.

Research Methodology

During this study, a questionnaire comprising of


questions asking about their views on environmental
education (EE), its importance, the status of EE in
Indian schools, the importance of nature based
programs and so on; was circulated.
The questionnaire was designed keeping in mind that
it was to be filled by the general public. Thus, the
language used was simple and not scientific and the
questions were very basic.
In all the study received 78 responses, which have
been analyzed as a part of this study.
Analysis was carried out using MS Excel 2007.

Research Questions

The major questions that were answered


during this study were:

What is the importance of Nature based


programs in environmental education?

Why is it important in India?

What does the public feel about


Environmental education in schools & by
Nature Based Programs?

Research Limitations

One major limitation was the low


response rate to the questionnaire which
was circulated online.

The study was aimed at leaning public


perceptions of nature based programs,
but only the respondents interested in
environmental education seemed to
answer the questionnaire.
