Reporting on the web

What is nVision ?
Reporting Tool that works within spreadsheets.
Retrieves information from PS Database and places it into
a Excel spreadsheet.
This transfer of information from the database to
spreadsheet enables us to use familiar excel commands
for formatting and analyzing data.
Build in-house
Part of Tools
An Excel based Reporting Tools
Supports analysis on the result

Ways to access nVision

Report Layout
An Excel spreadsheet
Doesnt include actual PeopleSoft data
Defines the structure of the reportquery
information, criteria, text, formulas, graphics,
formatting, or other information.
Once a Layout has been saved, we can use it
repeatedly to run reports

How to open a Layout

Layout

Layout Types
Two Types: Matrix
Use Criteria, Ledger and Query
Tabular
Use Query

Use PeopleSoft queries

to retrieve data.
The columns in the
report correspond to the
fields selected by the
query. The rows display
the entire query result
set.

Have data
selection
criteria based
on the
intersection of
columns and
rows in the
spreadsheet,
creating a
criteria matrix.

Layout Criteria
Allows to specify the data we wish to extract from
our PS database and where to place it on the report

Cell
Row
Column
Worksheet

Criteria can be
placed at any level
within the report
layout
Each level overrides
the level below it to
form a hierarchy

nVision Variables
Used for dynamic heading information
For example: As of Date (%ASD%) variable
for as of reporting date.

Three categories:
1. Report Request
2. Date & Time period
3. Scope-related

Source

nVision Filter
Filter identity specific detail values from PeopleSoft
trees, act to limit query, ledger and labels

nVision Options
To show the normal warning

messages displayed by nVision, for

example: overwriting an existing
file.

To display the SQL calls as the

report runs. Very useful in
debugging complex reports.

Allows you to quickly test nVision

Variables, scope, instances or
Microsoft Excel formatting. It will
not extract data from database.

Allows you to see the contents of

row 1 and column A.

Report Request
It is a collection of
report specific
information, such
as report request
name , report title,
associated layout
and scope.

Which Business Unit

you want to use
To which directory
you want to send
your report instance
For which date or
period you want the
report to run

Report Book
A grouping of nVision report request stored within
a Run Control ID for processing using Process
Scheduler

1. Choose the New Layout and assign the name for it.
2. Go to Layout Option and specify the SetID and
Effective date on the Prompting Options
3. Go to Layout Definition and specify all the criteria for
the layout (field, ledger, Timespan, label, variable,
etc.)
4. Define a Scope in Scope Definition if you want to use
the same layout for multiple instances
5. Create a Report Request, define the Report Name,
Requesting Business Unit, File location, and As of Date
of the report.

Drill Down
Gives the ability to slice and dice information in order
to do online analysis of information in a high level
summarized report

Enables to select a cell in the report and expand it according

to new criteria in a special Drilldown layout.

Useful when reporting is based on summary Ledgers, because

it provides underlying details whenever and wherever we need
them.

The key to drilldown is passing the selection criteria from a

parent cell to its child cell by using the Drilldown layout.

Example of Drilldown

Moving from Summary to detail level

Drill Down to Tabular layout

nVision Tree
Trees create hierarchical structures to
organize data from your PeopleSoft database.
Because trees are effective dated in
PeopleSoft, we can specify past, present, or
future data to appear in our report.
