MORAL OF THE STORY

Collection development policy still has
value in a digital world.
Collecting e-books may be fiscally advantageous, but the
ramifications on personnel and their responsibilities for all
of acquisition, cataloging, and access tasks have been
neglected.

THEORY PRACTICE

Selection criteria for e-books

expected demand; frequency of borrowed materials via ILL or request delivery; or suggested demand via a faculty request
price/relative cost of material in relation to the budget and other available materials

offline use availability
offers value-added features such as keyword searching, browsing, highlighting, copy/paste, and printing
number of concurrent usersavailability to change a SUPO title to a MUPO title after initial purchase
How cumbersome is the requirement to create an account or to download required software

Subscribe or purchase?

CONTENT:

Implications: Now
78% of acquisitions budget
spent on electronic resources
E-preferred:
o Off-campus availability
o Usage statistics
o Perpetual access

DDA / PDA:
o Content with regular updates
o Flexibility
o Mediation
I NDI ANA UNI VERSI T Y KO KO MO

Implications: Tomorrow (and beyond)

Unintended consequences:
New acquisition models
Who removes discovery records?
Who mediates acquisitions of
evidence-based purchases?

More coordination between

librarians
From where do MARC records come?
Where will discovery happen?
Floating responsibilities

Collection Development: Philosophy

The Purchase College Library evaluates, collects, and
provides access to materials that support the diverse and
changing nature of the curriculum (undergraduate and
graduate programs) and the research needs of the faculty,
students, and staff. Our goal is to provide materials that are
current, unique, and in-demand and to determine the best
format and platform for those materials to be delivered.
With a "just-in-time" rather than "just-in-case" approach to
collection development, we will do our best to meet the
needs of our primary constituents in a timely manner, and
to build a comprehensive, circulatingcollection of academic
resources in the visual/performing arts and the liberal arts
and sciences.

Collection Development: E-Books

E-books are preferred over print

versions when/if:
Requested by faculty/students/staff
For an online course
For course reserve
For an online student / commuter
student
A reference or multi-volume work
For high-demand items with a history of
theft
For textbook alternatives
To facilitate an immediate need

E-books are notpreferred over print

when/if:
Image-heavy books
Novels or popular titles
Graphic novels
Copies of faculty or staff publications
(library buys 2 print copies for collection)
We have the book in print (unless
requested to support an online course)
Cost-prohibitive ($150 +, unless
requested by faculty for a course; or a
reference work)

Collection Development: The Future

Use ILLiad as a
demand-driven,
data-driven
acquisitions
(mediated requests)
platform
Promote ebooks/ebrary to
faculty & students as
a get-it-now
service, or
undercover PDA
