Project Proposal

Business Question:
How efficient is the public transportation in
Singapore compared to Hong Kong?
Delay in Train Services (i.e. train
disruptions)
Frequency of waiting time
Transport Fares Statistics
Average speed of MRT trains
Matching average fare per
boarding

Summary of proposed dashboard

The frequent increase in fare prices has raised concerns as to whether the
fare price has matched its train efficiency.
With the question in mind, we drilled down to several segments to determine
the efficiency. Since Hong Kong has the highest Operational Efficiency in
terms of fare box ratio and it has similar demographics, we can use Hong
Kongs MTR system as a basis for comparison.
Through this data research, we hope to share our findings with our fellow
Singaporeans about the efficiency of the local transportation while providing
assistance to the government for decision-making should there be any
improvements needed.

Benefits of proposed dashboard

Drill into specific details
Allow us to choose desired variable or data
based on Dimensions and Measures

Zoom into specific bookmarked location

All related information can be seen easily should
there be any maps used for the dashboard
(such as various train stations as bookmarked location)
4

Benefits of proposed dashboard

Real time data-flow
Allows the updated website data to be immediately
reflected onto our dashboard such as the rate of increase
in fare prices or any fluctuations in data

Provide better visuals

Data are placed in a systematic way
easily understand the graphs
(possible reasons for the differences in transport efficiency between
Singapore and Hong Kong)

Illustrations for dashboard

(proposed dashboard may be altered)

Real-time update
from year to year
The government
can be updated
about the trend in
train frequency

Users can spot the

difference in terms of
average commuter
service being available
More MRT stations

stations
MRT is more accessible
& convenient
Helps to access current
efficiency of MRT

For example we
wish to create a
chart that combines
both the data for
Hong Kong and
Singapore using a
shape to denote the
data for a specific
information

Users can:
hover over the desired location
and distance (matching fare
will be stated)
create a journey with the
shortest distance mapped out
minimal time wastage & help in
direct comparison of efficiency
of MRT and MTR

Features that facilitates analysis

Bar Chart: continuous/discrete data (allows for better comparison)
Line Chart: shows the changes over a variable; forecasts future trends & take
actions
Differentiation in Colours: better understanding + visual appealing
Quick Filtering: filter out useful information; zoom in on selected data &
simplify work for analysis
Features on Marks Card: differentiate information to avoid confusion
(annotate charts to make it more informative)

URL Action: extracts live data on the dashboard and allows instant updates
