SOCIAL ILLS THAT AIL THE INDIAN

SOCIETY.
BY-MOHAMMAD SAAD
ROLL NO -15 CLASS 12 TH

INTRODUCTION
A society can only be developed when all the
amenities are fulfilled or achieved. In India
certain issues have been over come and
achieved but still some social issues are in the
half way e.g. people below poverty line, literacy
rate, unemployment of youth, public health
system, dowry system, domestic violence,
corruption and political system of India

MAIN SOCIAL ILLS :

There are many social problems In India but main
social issues which warrants attention of all
sources are as under: Poverty
Over Population
Corruption
Child Labour
Casteism
Dowry System

OTHER ISSUES THAT AIL THE INDIAN

SOCIETY
Unemployment
Sanitation
Literacy rate
Domestic Violence
Corruption
Alcoholism
Transport
Education System Public Health System

POVERTY

INTRODUTION
Poverty is the prime source of
practically all evils , whether political ,
social or economic . a poverty stricken
land is an easy prey to its greedy and
jealous neighbours . Poverty has
brought about political revolutions,
moral degeneration and economic
upheavals. A nation of hungry and
starving millions cannot preserve its
integrity and independence for long.

SUGGESTIONS: Education is the only means by which all such

problems can be sorted. The pros and cons of this
plight are the government continues to introduce
the policies which remain merely on papers and
are exempted from being implemented.
If education for all prevails in the country to
the zenith, then the development trap which is
created can be eradicated. But being used to
spoon feeding will not work what makes a
difference is we at individual level join hands and
pull up our socks so that we overcome the
problems in the race of life.

This would require huge investments both from the private

sector as well as the public sector to keep a stumbled block
in the path of such holocaust to avoid great peril.

OUR EFFORTS MAY INCLUDE

Help a poor child to acquire proficiency in language
Monthly support for a Village Tuition Centre that
provides supplementary learning to school going children
Provide Rehabilitation of the socially retarded and the
youth
Sponsor the education of a girl for one year
Support 1 month tuition expenses for 20 poor Grade
students.
Sponsor a 2 month Functional literacy program through
Computer for poor Dalit women

Educate a disabled child for a year

Sponsor a child's education (inclusive of fees, books,
uniforms, supplementary nutrition and medical check
up)
Donate a bicycle to a poor school going child
Education, transportation and medical expenses can
be provided.
Part sponsor a years college education of a needy
student
1 month Computer Training expenses for 48 Poor
Tribal students

An educational system isn't

worth a great deal if it
teaches young people how
to make a living but doesn't
teach them how
to make a
life.

"Education's purpose is to
replace an empty mind with
an open one."

OVER POPULATION

OVER POPULATION: According to 1981 census our population is

about 68.5 crore , which is about three times in
USA, having three fold size. Compared to the
natural and human resources of the country
India is definitely overpopulated. The reason of
overpopulation may be defined as lack of
awareness among the uneducated class of the
society which binds the nation from being
developed. According to U.N. projections, Indias
population certainly cuts much of the fruits of
development.

FACTORS RESPONSIBLE: Lack of proper education

Being superstitious by nature, Indians regard children as the gift of
nature.
They know very little about the modern methods of population
control.
They do not realise the importance of better standards of living.

Countries go through five stages of population growth

These are shown by the Demographic transition model (DTM)

Poorer, less developed countries are in the earlier stages of the

DTM, whilst richer more developed countries are in the later
stages.

THIS HAS ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL

IMPACTS:
Economic
The working population pay taxes, some
of which the government use to pay the
state pensions of older people and to pay
for services like healthcare and
retirement homes.
Taxes would need to go up because there
are more pensions to pay for and older
people need more healthcare.
The economy would grow more slowly- less
money is being spent on things that help
the economy e.g. education and business.

Social
Healthcare services are stretched
more because older people need more
medical care.
People will need to spend more time
working as unpaid carers for older
family members. This means that the
working population have less leisure
time and are more stressed and
worried.
People may have fewer children
because they cant afford lots of
children when they have dependant
older relatives. This leads to a drop in
birth rate.
The more old people there are the
lower the pension will be .People will
have to retire later because they cant
afford to get by on a state pension.

SUGGESTIONS FOR POPULATION

CONTROL:

Social Legislation prohibiting early marriage.

Improvement in the percentage of literacy.

Family norms should be implemented so that they are made

aware of the consequences of large families and that is possible
only because of EDUCATION.

CONCLUSION
India is a fast developing country in the world
where our systems are weak. So there is always
a chance of corruption. Who is responsible for
this? What action should be taken? What we
must keep in mind is Nothing is Impossible. If
we join our hands together there can be an end
to this deep rooted evil. The only thing is it
takes time. A little progress everyday leads to a
big result one day..may be tomorrow. Be

CHILD LABOR:-

INTRODUTION

Child labour refers to the

employment of children under 18
years at regular and sustained
labour. Childhood is considered
to be the golden period of ones
life. As every coin has two side,
there are several children who
are tormented and wish to quit
their childhood. To escape the

What is child labor?

Child labour is generally
speaking, work for children that
harms them or exploits them in
someway (physically, mentally,
morally or by blocking access to
education).
It is the work that exceeds a
minimum number of hours
depending on the age of a child
and on the type of work

How Many Are There?

61% in Asia, 32% in Africa, and 7% in Latin America, 1% in US,
Canada, Europe and other wealthy nations.
In Asia, 22% of the workforce is children. In Latin America, 17% of
the workforce is children.
246 million child workers aged 5 and 17 were involved in child labor.
Out of which 171 million were involved in work that by its nature is
hazardous

Child labor in
India
INDIA accounts for the second
highest number where child labor in
the world.
Africa accounts for the highest
number of children employed and
exploited.
According to certain experts
approximately 10 million bonded
children laborers are working as
domestic servants in India.
Beyond this there are almost 55
million bonded child laborers hired
across various other industries.

MEASURES TO COPE UP:-

Getting a child educated

Teaching children around you.
Being more active to the
happenings around, can make a
big difference in the current
situation and condition of
children of India.
"You have to love your children

Conclusion
The social malady of child labor
can be brought under control, if
each individual takes responsibility
of reporting about anyone
employing a child below the age of
14years.
Thus, instead of ignoring on
should find out about reporting
child labor and how such children
can actually be saved.
Child labor can be controlled if
the government functions
effectively with the support of the
public.

CASTEISM

INTRODUTION
"Caste" is the term used to describe the complex system of social
divisions that pervades life in India. Caste is an ancient hereditary
system that developed alongside and became intertwined with
Hinduism. Caste determines whom a person can marry, specifies what
kind of work he can do, and even controls what he can eat or touch.
Since the great majority of Indians are Hindu, the caste system has
played an enormous role in the history of India, and it continues to exert
tremendous influence on modern Indian culture and politics.

Caste system is based on the principle of inequality. It

believes that some people are higher than others. They are
not fit to live with the high caste people.
They are to be deprived of all privileges and facilities.
They are denied high posts and positions they cant man
these.
Their educational backwardness stood on the way of their
consciousness, on the way of social justice.
Once backward in educational field they had least share in
bureaucracy and decision making process,to their own
advantage.

Indias constitution guarantees equal rights.

Article 14 says that the state gives to every
person equality before the law and equal
protection of the laws.
Article 15 prohibits discrimination against any
citizen on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex,
place of birth, etc.
Article 16 guarantees equality of opportunity in
matters of public employment, etc.

At the same time, the constitution provides for a

reservation system.
Article 46 says The state shall promote with special
care the education and economic interests of the
weaker sections of the people, and, in particular of the
scheduled castes and the scheduled tribes, and shall
protect them from social injustice and all forms of
exploitation.
Respond: Does Indias reservation system contradict
(go against) her constitutions promise of equal

DOWRY

INTRODUTION
Dowry means the money, goods or estate that a
woman brings to her husband in marriage
Dowry is a continuing demand. It is not one
isolated payment made initially at the time of
marriage alone, but a series of gifts before and
after marriage till the in-laws and the husband
are appeased.
This custom of dowry has been in vogue since
very ancient times

As per the Dowry Prohibition Act 1961, Dowry is

Any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given
either directly or indirectly
By one party to a marriage to the other party to the
marriage; or
2. By parents of either party to a marriage or by any
other person to either party to the marriage or to any
other person, at or before or after the marriage

DOWRY RELATED CRIMES

Dowry Death
Indian law states that any suspicious death of a married
woman within seven years of her marriage is considered to
be a case of dowry death unless proved otherwise by the
defendants
It is a cognizable and non-bailable offence.
Dowry Deaths has been defined in under Sec. 304 B of
IPC as When the death of a woman is caused by any
burns or bodily injury or occurs otherwise than under
normal circumstances within seven years of her marriage
and it is shown that soon before her death she was
subjected to cruelty or harassments by her husband or by
any relative of her husband for, or in connection with the
any demand for dowry, such deaths shall be called 'dowry

2. Whoever commits dowry deaths shall be

punished by imprisonment for no less than seven
years, but which may extend to life imprisonment.

SUMMARY
This problem is frequent in low or lower middle class. Many of the
victims are in the early periods of marriage with extensive burns.
Moreover, newly married females are also much more vulnerable to
accidental burn as they, in their new place at in-laws house, fail to
acclimatize with all sorts of adversities. Though only few cases of
literate women succumbed to this injury in authors study, yet
literacy has little to do with these injuries as because female
literacy itself as whole is low.
Even the literate woman fails to acclimatize with the situation and
suicide is resulted. Many of the women die issue less or after
having one or two children. Apart from this, dowry problem which
results in bride burning is increasing day by day in spite of
legislation. Usually the dowry problem exists in joint families and
arranged marriages, where the burning of married females are
seen mostly.
