OVERCOMING RESISTANCE AND CHANGING ORGANIZATIONAL
CULTURES

Breaking the glass ceiling

The Macho Culture: masculinity of management and leadership.

Most are male dominated organizational cultures

Organizations suited more for men than women

Results to womens marginalization

How? Mens reluctance to share power in the mid to senior levels


of management

And male dominated level of organization will be less


comfortable and more difficult for the women to be on top

On the road to change

FIX THE WOMEN

Equipping women with skills and attributes necessary to progress in the


organization like leadership and development courses

Develop confidence

Supportive learning environment

VALUE THE FEMININE /ADD WOMEN AND STIR

Add women to the senior levels

Acknowledge the skills and talentsand accommodating their need for flexible
working

women are different but equal approach

SMALL DEEP CULTURAL CHANGES

Focusing on individualturning a light bulb in someones mind

Change on the personal level: touching on deep rooted and unconscious attitudes
and beliefs

On the road to change

HOLISTIC AND SYSTEMATIC CULTURE CHANGE

Not a piecemeal change or a quick fix

In a quantifiable and manageable way

FOLLOWING THE AUDIT

Assess the level of gender awareness

( history of equality and diversity, level of knowledge on which gender is


discussed and the role of business case)

Necessary to determine how women feel in the organization- welcomed or not?

Addressing three levels of change (organizational, interpersonal and individual)


+ committed leadership = real change

On the road to change

RESISTANCE

The desire to protect interest and retain identity = resistance to change

Passive resistance : denial that there is an inequality and insists that there is no
rationale for change

Individual level : refusal to participate in diversity training workshops or attending


in silence

Undermining the content of the workshop with humor, domination of agenda or


even through jokes.

WOMEN LED ORGANIZATIONS

Inability/slow adaptation or denial will either result to

Increasing regulation fro government

Women will leave and start their own organizations

Introduction of quotas in the board level.

On the road to change

CHANGE GENDER SOCIETY

Beyond the scope of an individual organization (firm level)

A call to participate in a wider social change
