Definition
Transportation is : the movement of people and goods from a certain
point/place to another wich is spatialy separated with or without
transportation vehicle or car.
Transportation Engineering is the application of technological and
scientific principle to the Planning, Functional Design, Operation, and
Management of Facilities for any mode of transportation in order to
provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and
environmentally compatible movement of people and goods .(ITE-1987)
Traffic Engineering is : a Branch of Transportation Engineering, is
described as that phase of transportation engineering which deals with
Planning, Geometric Design, and Traffic Operations of Roads, Streets,
and Highways, their Networks, Terminals, Abutting Land, and relationships
with other modes of transportation

Transportation Systems Issues

and Challenges :
1. Managing congestion.
2. Improving safety.
3. Providing equal access.
4. Protecting the Environment.

Transportation systems can be

evaluated in term of three basic
attributes :
1. Ubiquity : the amount of accesibility to the
system, directness of routing between access
points, and the systems flexibility to handle a
variety of traffic conditions.

2. Mobility :

the quantity of travel that can be

handled.

3. Efficiency :

the relationship between the cost of

transportation andBSthe
producttivity of the system.
