Essbase Backup, Restore, and Recovery


Overview
Backup/restore capabilities provide protection in several ways.
Maximize Essbase database uptime for critical analysis
Ensure data integrity
Provide quick response to hardware failure

Backup Options: Block Storage

Operating system backup


Export utility (data only)
Calculation script export (data only)
Automated Essbase process (archiving)

Files to back up:
Essn.ind, Essn.pag
Dbname.esm, Dbname.tct, Dbname.ind
Appname.app, Dbname.db, X.lro
Database files, such as OTL, CSC, RUL, REP, EQD, and
SEL
Essbase.sec, Essbase.bak
Essbase.cfg
MaxL and ESSCMD scripts

Export Utility

Creates an ASCII text file of database data


Is invoked from Administration Services Console or MaxL
Produces a file that can be loaded directly into a database
Allows an administrator to choose the level of data to be
exported
All data

Calculation Script Export


Exporting data through calculation scripts offers some benefits
over the Export utility.
Export subsets of data (focused)
Export in binary format (faster)

Automated BSO Backup/Restore


Prior to Release 11
Automating block storage database backup prior to Release
11 typically involves:
Using a MaxL script
Putting the database in read-only mode
Using a third-party backup utility
Returning the database to read/write mode

Transaction Logging and Replay


Set up transaction logging in the essbase.cfg file. You can
view logged transactions and replay them in Administration
Services Console.

Spreadsheet Update Logging

Provides protection against lost spreadsheet transactions


Is enabled in the essbase.cfg file
Provides two parameters:
SSAUDIT
SSAUDITR (automatic clearing)

Creates two audit log files:


Dbname.atx
Dbname.alg

Recovering from a Failed Database

Essbase recovers the database automatically.


Recovery time is based on database size.
Essbase performs the following activities:
Transaction recovery
Index file recovery
Data-free space recovery

Recovery procedures vary depending on the operation in


progress at the time of server interruption.

Aggregate Storage Backup


One option: manual backup
Stop the application.
Use the operating system to copy the application
directory.

Exclude contents of the aggregate storage temp directory.

Security Restoration: Native Security

A security backup file is essential.


You can use one of the following methods to update the
backup:
Administration Services Console
MaxL

After server interruptions, you must copy the backup file


before restarting Essbase Server.
