INTRODUCTION:

Voltage flicker is considered as one of the most severe power quality problems.
FACTS devices have been gradually noticed to be used for voltage flicker
compensation.
This paper presents the contrasting approaches; dealing with the voltage flicker
mitigation in three stages.

Voltage flicker mitigation techniques:

FCTCR(Fixed capacitor thyristor controlled reactor).
STATCOM(Static synchronous compensator).

Flexible AC Transmission systems, called FACTS.

The basic applications of FACTS-devices are:
Power flow control,
Increase of transmission capability,
Voltage control,
Reactive power compensation,
Stability improvement,
Power quality improvement,
Power conditioning,
Flicker mitigation,
Interconnection of renewable and distributed generation and storages.

STATCOM:
The function of statcom is similar to that of a synchronous
condenser.
It provides reactive power compensation.
A complete STATCOM system basically consists of a DC
voltage source, self commutated converter using GCT
thyristor and step up transformer.

STATCOM structure and voltage / current characteristic

BASIC OPERATING PRINCIPLES OF STATCOM:

A STATCOM is a controlled reactive-power source.
It provides voltage support by generating or absorbing reactive power at the
point of common coupling without the need of large external reactors or
capacitor banks.
The STATCOM is connected to the power system at a PCC (point of
common coupling), through a step-up coupling transformer, where the voltagequality problem is a concern.

STATCOM operation in a power system:

CONTROL OF STATCOM:

The controller of a STATCOM operates the converter in a particular

way that the phase angle between the converter voltage and the
transmission line voltage is dynamically adjusted and synchronized.

so that the STATCOM generates or absorbs desired VAR at the point of

coupling connection.

Two Modes of Operation:

There are two modes of operation for a STATCOM inductive mode and the
capacitive mode.
The converter voltage is higher than the transmission line voltage, then
STATCOM is considered to be operating in a capacitive mode.
Similarly, when the system voltage is higher than the converter voltage, the
STATCOM is considered to be operating in an inductive mode.

STATCOM operating in inductive or capacitive

modes

This dual mode capability enables the STATCOM to provide inductive

compensation as well as capacitive compensation to a system.
This inductive compensation is to provide inductive reactance when
overcompensation due to capacitors banks occurs.
This happens during the night, when a typical inductive
load is about 20% of the full load, and the capacitor banks
along the transmission line provide with excessive capacitive
reactance due to the lower load.

VOLTAGE FLICKER:
Interaction of electrical loads with the network causes further deterioration of
the electrical power quality.
High power loads that draw fluctuating current, such as large motor drives
and arc furnaces, cause low frequency cyclic voltage variations that result in
flickering of light sources which can cause significant problems with the
stability of electrical devices and electronic circuits.

A small voltage change produces a noticeable effect on the luminous flux of a

bulb.

STATCOM as an effective mitigating device for voltage flicker, three types of

compensators are simulated in MATLAB.

First, the voltage flicker compensation is adopted using FCTCR.

Then a 6-pulse voltage-source converter STATCOM is used and
finally for a complete voltage flicker mitigation a 12-pulse
voltage-source converter STATCOM is designed.

Compensation using 12-pulse voltage-source converter STATCOM

CONCLUSION
The design and application of STATCOM technology based on voltage-source
converters for voltage flicker mitigation is discussed in this paper.
Mitigation is done in three stages and the results are compared and contrasted.
First, FCTCR is used to compensate for the voltage flicker, then a 6- pulse
voltage-source converter STATCOM and finally a 12- pulse STATCOM based
on voltage-source converter equipped with an RLC filter are designed for
complete voltage flicker compensation without harmonics.
