DIRECTIVE BEHAVIOUR
Involves: clearly telling people what to do,
how to do it, and when to do it, and then
closely supervising their performance.
SUPPORTIVE BEHAVIOUR
Involves: listening to people, providing
support and encouragement for their efforts,
and then facilitating their involvement in
problem-solving and decision-making.

Style 1: Directing
The leader provides specific instructions
and
closely
supervises
task
accomplishment.
Style 2: Coaching
The leader continues to direct and
closely supervise task accomplishments,
but also explains decisions, solicits
suggestions and supports progress.

The leader facilitates and supports
subordinates
efforts
toward

accomplishment
and

responsibility for decision-making with
them.
Style 4: Delegating
The leader turns over responsibility for
decision making and problem solving to
