EMPOWERMENT
CONCEPT AND ITS
MEANING

CONCEPT
Empowerment can be viewed as means of
creating a social environment in which one
can make decisions and make choices either
individually or collectively for social
transformation.

MEANING
Empowerment is the process of enabling or
authorizing individual to think, take action and
control work in an autonomous way. It is the
process by which one can gain control over
ones destiny and the circumstances of ones
lives. Empowerment includes control over
resources (physical, human, intellectual and
financial) and over ideology (beliefs, values
and attitudes).

THERE WAS TIME WHEN WOMAN WERE JUST


KITCHEN KEEPERS AND HOUSE KEEPERS IN THE
INDIAN SOCIETY. GRADUALLY MOMENT BEGAN TO
GET EDUCATED , EVEN HIGHLY EDUCATED AND A
STAGE CAME WHEN SOME OF THEM CAME OUT ON
THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL FIELD TO SUBSHOULDERS WITH THE MEN IN THESE FIELD. IN
MODERN INDIA WOMAN HAVE ACHIEVED HIGH
OFFICES INCLUDING THAT OF THE PRESIDENT ,
PRIME MINSITER, SPEAKER OF THE LOK SABHA ETC.

SCENARIO

IN THOSE DAYS WOMEN FACED MANY SOCIAL


PROBLEMS LIKE DOWRY, CHILD MARRIAGES, DEATH
DURING CHILD BIRTH, SATI ETC. BUT NOW A DAYS
THE STATUS OF WOMEN IN INDIA HAS BEEN
SUBJECT MANY GREAT CHANGES OUR THE PAST
FEW MILLENNIA. IN YEAR 1995 WAS DECLARED AS
THE
INTERNATIONAL
YEAR
OF
WOMEN
THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE WOMEN WERE
MADE AWARE OF THEIR STATUS AND PLACE IN
SOCIETY. WOMEN ARE NOW NO LONGER IN
SLUMBER. THEY ARE AWAKE AND MOVING FAST.

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy was an eminent medical practitioner, social


reformer and Padma Bhushan awardee in India. She was the first women
legislator in India. ( Madras Legislative Council in 1927)
She beginning lifelong effort to "correct the balance" for women.
Sarojini Naidu-The Nightingale of Indiawas an
Indian independence activist and poet. T he first woman to become the
governor of an Indian state. She was the second woman to become the
president of the Indian National Congressin 1925.
Rajkumari Amrit Kaurwas the health minister in theIndian Cabinetfor
ten years after India's independence from the British Rajin 1947. She was
an eminentGandhian, a freedom fighter, and a social activist. She was also
a member of the Constituent Assembly, The body that framed the
constitution of India.
Aruna Asif Ali was an Indian independence activist. She is widely
remembered for hoisting the Indian National
Congress flag in Bombay during the Quit India Movement
