How does your media product represent

particular social groups?

Evaluation of music magazine
By Vicky Lawrence

My music magazine is an alternative rock magazine which is a genre

which typically has a target audience of males slightly more than
females, young people between the age of 16-25 of a working class
background and a white ethnicity. This social group are generally
stereotyped to be noisy, different in personality and style, often
miserable and quite troublesome. The magazine that I have created
challenges some of these stereotypes and presents this social group to
be unique, wanting to have fun and being hard working.

The colour scheme

represents the social
group to be fun loving and
quite relaxed as there are
mostly bright colours,
such as yellow, red and
blue.

As the cover artist is of

a white ethnicity, the
social group is
represented to be
predominately of this
ethnicity too as they
will able to relate to the
artist more.
The layout of the page,
how everything is quite
organised and there is
some small areas of free
space, represents the
social group to be fairly
relaxed.

The artist which is

including in the main
image shows the age
group of the audience,
as she is around a
similar age group to the
social group discussed.
Her expression
presents the group to
be focused and fits into
the typical stereotype
as it shows them to be
quite moody, which is
what is generally
expected of the
alternative rock genre.

My magazine costs 2.00

which represents a
working class social
group as of this age
group, the young people
will either be using their
parents money or will be
earning minimum wage.

The colloquial
language used in the
editors note
represents the
audience to be
friendly and relaxed.

This competition
represents the social
group of the target
audience to be
hardworking, as they
will have or will be
wiling to learn how to
play a guitar. Also, this
represents them to be of
a working class because
they may not be able to
afford a guitar.

The short descriptions

of the contents
represents the social
to be of a younger
age, like between 1625, and to have quite
a short attention
span, as they can
turn straight to the
page they want after
getting a small insight
into each article.

The subheading of
whos on tour
presents the social
group associated
with alternative
rock to be fun
loving and deeply
interested in music
by how there are
multiple pages
dedicated to live
gigs.

The style of the artist

represents the social
group to be unique
and to show their
personality through
what

group is
represented
to be
predominatel
y young
males
through the
main cover
artist being
an attractive
young female.
However,
young
females
among the
social group
are
represented
through how
they are
around the
same age as
the artist and
can relate to
her.

The artists smile suggests happiness with

music and this presents the social group to
be inspired by and love music.
Colours used
here again
represents
the social
group to be
fun loving
but also
captures the
stereotypical
perception of
alternative
rock by the
dark colours
and tones of
the images.

As there is not an overload of text, the social group are represented to

have a short attention span and also to be relaxed as the language in
the interview is very informal and therefore is more suitable for an
audience between the ages of 16-25.
