SDCCH Traffic(mE)/user = BHCA * SDCCH Mean Holding Time(s) / 3.6

Calculating SDCCH TS
Number of subscribers = 2000
Generally SDCCH traffic is taken to be 25% of TCH traffic in
case of inner cells and 28% in case of border cells.
Estimated TCH traffic/subscriber = 25mE
Estimated SDCCH traffic/subscriber =25mE*25%= 6.25mE
Total SDCCH traffic = 6.25mE * 2000 = 12.5 E
TCH GOS = 2%
SDCCH/8 GOS = of TCH GOS = 0.5%

After Consulting Erlang B table:

So number of SDCCH channels = 22
SDCCH TS = 22/8 = 3

SDCCH Dimensioning at Abis

Total E1 TS = LAPD TS + TCH TS
Calculating LAPD TS
For FR:
LAPD TS=(TRXs +1)*16/64
For HR:
LAPD TS=(TRXs +1)*32/64
Calculating TCH TS:
TCH TS=(TRXs*8 - BCCH TS - SDCCH TS)/4

Case Study
What is the condition for the number of SDCCH TS
for a site with configuration 544 to require only one
E1?
Solution:
LAPD TS=(13+1)/2 = 7 (in case of HR)
TCH TS=(13*8 3 x)/4 =(101-x)/4
In order to require one E1:
7+(101-x)/4 =< 30
x >= 9

SDCCH Dimensioning at BSC

At FR:
One BIE Board can support 30 TRX with no SDCCH
constraints.
At HR:
One BIE Board can support given number of TRXs if :
0.5(a+n) + 2(8*n b c) =< 256
a=no of sites configured on BIE
b=number of sectors under the BIE
c=number of SDCCH under the BIE
n=number of TRX under the BIE

Case Study
What is the condition of the number of SDCCH TS for a
444_222 site to terminate on one BIE board?
Solution:
0.5(a+n) + 2(8*n b c) =< 256
a=no of sites configured on BIE
b=number of sectors under the BIE
c=number of SDCCH under the BIE
n=number of TRX under the BIE
0.5(a+n) + 2(8*n b c) =< 256
0.5(1+18) + 2(8*18 3 c) =< 256
0.5(19) + 2(141 c) =< 256
c >= 18

SDCCH Dynamic Allocation Feature

Summary:
SDCCH Dynamic Allocation adjusts SDCCH configurations
dynamically to reduce SDCCH congestion.
If certain conditions are fulfilled, the idle FR TCH is
converted to SDCCH/8. And if the SDCCH channels have
been idle for some period, the recovery from SDCCH to
TCH would be performed.
Each time only one TCH converted to SDCCH/8 and vice
versa.

Conditions for conversion

1.
2.
3.

Idle SDCCH channels <= Idle SD Thrsh

Idle TCH channels > 4 or > the TRX number of the cell
No of SDCCH channels of the cell < Cell SD Maximum

Idle SD Thrsh
Default and Recommended =2
Implemented=2

Cell SD Maximum
Default=80
Recommended= SDCCHs configured in the cell + 8
Implemented=80

Recovering TCH from SDCCH

Time taken for recovery of TCH from SDCCH depends on
number of idle SDCCH channels and TCH Minimum
Recovery Time (s)
Procedure:

A counter is set to TCH Minimum Recovery Time at conversion of a TCH to

an SDCCH/8.
Count is updated every 3 seconds.
If current number of idle SDCCHs > 8 + idle SD Thrsh, counter=counter-3
If current number of idle SDCCHs < 8 + idle SD Thrsh, counter=counter+12
If current number of idle SDCCHs = 8 + idle SD Thrsh, counter=counter

A TCH is recovered when counter=<0.

TCH Minimum Recovery Time: Default = 600 s
Recommended = 600 s
Implemented = 60 s
