INTRODUCTION
Catalytic converter is a device used to reduce the
emissions in engine by a way of catalyzed chemical
reactions.
The harmful gases are Nox ,Co and unburned
hydrocarbon
The net work output per cycle from the engine is
dependent on the pumping work consumed, which is
directly proportional to the backpressure
Hence backpressure is the drawback in the converter

OBJECTIVES
Identify the existing problem in the catalytic converter of
SI engine
To reduce the back pressure and increasing the efficiency
of the engine
Redesign of a catalytic converter-changing the inlet and
outlet cone angle and CFD analysis is carried out to
optimise the best one
Investigate the performance, backpressure, emission of a
SI engine and experimental study is performed
Then the comparative study is done with the existing
converter

DESIGN OF A CATALYTIC CONVERTER

As the existing converter and it has an angle of
= 30
The angle of both inlet and outlet cone is
changed
The angles are = 35, 40, 45

MODELLING OF A CATALYTIC
CONVERTER

CFD ANALYSIS

OPTIMISATION RESULT
From the above analysis it is concluded that
the angle 45 has an less pressure value when
compared to the other angles chosen
So the manufacturing is to be done with angle
45

FUTURE WORK
Manufacturing of the catalytic
converter
Experimental investigation is to be
carried out and compared with the
existing converter
