The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation:

 Is formally recognised by WHO and ILO

 Is an independent group of experts established in 1992
 Maintains close relationships with other national and
international organizations
ICNIRP:

provides guidance and advice on the health hazards of

non-ionizing radiation

develops international guidelines on limiting exposure

to non-ionizing radiation that are independent and
science based

provides science based guidance and recommendations

on protection from non-ionizing radiation exposure

OCCUPATIONALLY EXPOSED POPULATION
Consist of adults who are generally exposed under known
conditions and are trained to take precautionary steps.

GENERAL PUBLIC EXPOSURE.

Comprises individuals of all ages and of varying health status,
and may particularly be unaware to their exposure to EMF
 DEFINITION
 PHYSICAL QUANTITIES
1.SAR(specific energy absorption rate)
2.Current density.
3.Power density .
 Reference levels.
FEATURES
• Available with isotropic probes to
cover 100 kHz to 60 GHz
• Large graphical display
• Plug-and-play probe interface with
automatic probe parameter detection
• Fully automatic zeroing

5000 results
OPTIONS
• GPS interface and mountable
receiver for positioning data
documentation
• Voice recorder for adding comments
• Conditional logging, threshold
controlled
 Effects of EMF exposure under severe
environmental conditions.
 Potentially higher thermal sensitivity factor.
 Additional factors include:-
1.Differences in absorption of EM energy.
2.Reflection, focusing and scattering of incident
field

PURPOSE
 To verify that radio network (BTS Antennas) installed by TP in
Pakistan and AJ&K/NA are complying with standards/guidelines set by
International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection
(ICNIRP) for radiation hazards (adopted as National Standard by
Government of Pakistan-PTA).
GENERAL CRITERIA FOR BASE STATIONS
 If there are areas accessible to workers that exceed the guidelines for
uncontrolled (public) exposure, the companies owning the infrastructure
should make sure workers know where the areas are, and what
precautions need to be taken when entering these areas. In general, this
would be areas less than 8 meters (25 feet) from the radiating surface of
the antenna.
 For 900 MHz public exposure = < 0.57 mw / cm²
 For 1800 MHz public exposure = < 1.2 mw / cm²

Ref: ICNIRP guidelines 1998 General public exposure

Adopted as a standard by PTA

To start with the activity we short listed 92 BTS
sites from our Network.
Short listing criteria is: Roof Top BTS Site with
Tower/pole less then or equal to 6 meters (RT6)
We are using Broad Band Field Density Meter NBM-
550 to measure Power Density on sites
 Preventive actions on following four sites is
recommended this year
 IIB-105 (City Bank blue area)
 IIB-102 (Khalid Plaza 38,Blue area )
 IRP-512 (Rawalpindi Bahria Town School)
 IRP-417 (Hotel Al Farooq Rawalpindi)
 IIB-105 (Citibank ISB Blue Area)
 At site IIB-105 Human exposure possibility with
in 8m of two sectors is very high.
 PD value with in 8m of Antennas of two sectors
is exceeding the set limit i.e. PD ranges from
1.8 to 6.2 mW/cm².
IRP-417 (Hotel Al-Frooq Rawalpindi)
 At site IRP-417, possibility of Human exposure
to antennas of two sectors is very high,
however the PD value is in acceptable range
even inside 8m.
 But Hazard marking is recommended as it’s a
local hotel rooftop and people may come on
roof, and sign board installation and
maintenance teams may get exposed closely.
IRP-522 (14-A, Tipu Road Sirsyed Chowk, Near
Dispensary, Rawalpindi )
 At site IRP-522, possibility of Human exposure
to antennas of two sectors is very high,
however the PD value is in acceptable range
even inside 8m.
IIB-102 (Khalid Plaza, Blue area,Islamabad )
 At site IIB-102, possibility of Human exposure to
antennas of two sectors is very high, even the
PD value is also not in acceptable range even
inside 8m.
 The value of PD was reaching above 6mV/cm².
A regular measurement at each site should be
taken after every 8 to 9 months.
A demarcation boundary should be marked or a
“DANGER BOARD” should be placed especially
in CitiBank and Al-Khalid plaza for safety
measures.
Must create awareness about this exposure to
the public and workers working around there.
Take immediate steps to minimize the exposure
hazards as soon as possible.
