TIPS BEFORE DEFENSE

1. BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND

Look at the grading sheet first

2. PREPARE YOUR PRESENTATION/SLIDES


IN ADVANCE

Plan out the presentation as a team


Thoroughly discuss the sequence of the presentation
Find out what your panelists want to see and hear
Create a formation that suits your presentation

3. DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND MASTER


YOUR THESIS

Know everything about your thesis, not just the parts youre
presenting.

4. THINK OF POSSIBLE QUESTIONS AND


ANSWERS

Think about possible loopholes in your thesis and provide an


answer for them prior to going into defense.
You can ask a friend to help you out

5. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE

Know your presentation by heart. Your script, when to click,


the flow of the speakers, etc.
Make sure that you are able to finish your presentation before
the maximum allowed time.

6. GET ENOUGH SLEEP BEFORE THE


DEFENSE

You dont want to get sick or lose your voice

7. RESERVATIONS

Confirm with your thesis advisers if you need to reserve a


projector
Min of 1 week lead time for the reservation in Gokongwei Hall

TIPS DURING DEFENSE

1. DRESS TO IMPRESS

Dress appropriately
Women - at least 2-inch heel but max of 4, collared blouse, pencil skirt,
and blazer (optional but preferred)
Men Long-sleeved polo, coat, and tie (the tie should be touching the
tip of the belt)

2. MANNER OF PRESENTATION
Confidence is key
Voice projection
Dont hold anything
When not talking/presenting, make sure to still look
presentable in front of your thesis panel.
Make due with the space you have

3. ALWAYS KEEP TRACK OF TIME

TIPS DURING Q&A PORTION


DEFENSE IMPLIES ATTACK

1. EXPECT TO BE ATTACKED

Dont worry
You probably know more about the topic more than anyone else!

Dont be defensive
Look confident while answering

2. RECORD THE COMMENTS AND


SUGGESTIONS
Write all of them down
Assign a scribe
You can voice record your panelists, but ask permission first!

3. NOTES/REMINDERS
Make sure everyone is given an equal chance of answering
your panelists question
If needed, you can ask your panelist if you can huddle
before answering.
During Thesis1 during q&a the comments of the panelists
are mere recommendations
Dont get all defensive

TIPS FOR MAKING THE PRESENTATION

1. ESTABLISH A COLOR SCHEME

Keep it consistent across slides

2. PERSISTENT ELEMENTS

Make sure every slide doesnt change completely to have a


flow

3. AVOID TO MUCH INFO

Dont put all your points on one slide

4. SPACE MEANS EMPHASIS

Important elements get their own slides


Supporting details can be lumped into one

5. PREPARE YOUR PRESENTATIONS EARLY

6. IMAGE TIPS
No GIFs
No PIXELATIONS
Dont distort the aspect ratio
Dont use pictures with watermarks
Suggestion: Use ClipArt
It would look more professional

7. SIZE

Make sure it is big enough to be seen

8. DONT USE BLOCKS OF TEXTS

Opt for charts, graphs, or tables, if possible


Help convey quantitative information faster than laying it out
or using a table

9. ANIMATION

Not to little to look bland


Not too much to look distracting

THINGS TO BRING

1. EVALUATION FORMS

All should be encoded


Make sure not to misspell the names of your panelists

2. LAPTOPS

Brings laptops for cases of emergency

3. EXTRA COPIES OF PRESENTATION

Bring back-ups (at least 2-3 file extensions)


Options: .ppt / .pptx / .pps / .ppsx / .pdf

4. CONNECTORS

Bring connectors if you intend to use Mac

GENERAL TIPS

1. PARTS OF THE THESIS

Research objectives should have corresponding hypothesis


Identify all stakeholders in the significance (discuss per
stakeholder)
Recommendation should be aligned with significance
Conclusion should be aligned with objectives and hypothesis
