Comparativ

Comparative adjectives are used to

compare differences between two nouns.
Elephants are bigger than
mice.
Mice are more petite than
elephants.

There are two ways to form comparative

adjectives, depending on the type of
adjective.

Short
Adjectives

These are also known as OneSyllable adjectives and follow

simple rules to change them into
a comparative form.

These rules are easy to comprehend

depending on the kind of short adjective
we are using.
Tall Taller
Short
Most of the one-syllable adjectives are
Shorter
compounded by only 1 vowel. Just add
Long Longer
them er at the end.
Small
Smaller
New - Newer
Big Bigger
Some adjectives also are structured in
Hot Hotter
consonant + vowel + consonant or have
Slim
this ending. In these cases double the last
Slimmer
consonant and add er at the end.
Thin - Thinner

Short
Adjectives

Other short adjectives end in y, here

just change it to i and add er at the
end.
Happy Happier / Funny Funnier / Lazy Lazier

Nice Nicer
Cute Cuter
Wise Wiser
Wide - Wider

Some other contain one vowel but there is

an e at the end preceded by a
consonant, here you just need to add a
single r at the end.

And there are adjectives that have a

diphtonge (2 vowels joined) instead a
single vowel, they still are one-syllable
adjectives. Here just add er at the end.

Young Younger
Great Greater
Proud Prouder
Loud - Louder

Long
Adjectives

Long adjectives are even easier to

recognize and understand.

These kind of adjectives are made by two or three syllables (or more, in some
cases), no matter if those are dihtongues or triphtongues. What makes them
easy to understand their comparative form, is that they dont suffer any change,
you just need to add the word more before the adjective.

Important More Important

Awesome More Awesome

Adorable More Adorable
Beautiful More Beautiful

Superlative

A superlative adjective expresses the

extreme or superior degree of a quality.

We use them when we talk about three or

more nouns, not with two.
The Everest is the highest mountain in the
world.
The Burj Khalifa is the tallest
building
Slots are the laziest
animals.
As the comparatives, these adjectives will
change depending if they are short or long.

Short
Adjectives

Strong The
Strongest
Slow The Slowest
Busy The Busiest
Angry The Angriest
Tall The tallest
Easy The Easiest
Large The Largest

Notice that all

the superlative
adjectives,
short or long,
begins with the
article the.

We apply the same rules as we saw

on the comparative adjectives, but in
this case the suffix (ending) changes;
instead of use an er at the end we
use est.
Interesting The most
interesting
Helpful The most helpful
Aggressive The most
aggressive
Confident The most confident
Nervous The most nervous
Energetic The most energetic
Perfect The most perfect

As the last examples, the long

adjectives follow the same rules;
instead add the word more we
add most before the adjective.
