INTRODUCTION
There are many forms of energy that help provide

power to the world, but each

one of those energies has its list of advantages and
disadvantages .With nuclear
energy ,there is a mix of bad and good for people and
the environment , but the
severity of disadvantages are what really concerns
people when discussing
nuclear energy, there are certain disadvantages that
people need to look into to
under stand the energy and these can actually change
your outlook on nuclear energy.

HOW IT RUNS..

Nuclear power plants are powered by

uranium and a process known as fission
.Instead of burning fossil fuels like other
plants do , a nuclear power plant uses the
fission process to split uranium atoms to
create a powerful heat energy that boils
water .the water turns into high pressured
steam that spins a turbine that powers a
generator to create electricity.

FUEL

Nuclear fuels are, physically, even rarer than fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels at least are made on Earth, over millions of
years. Heavy elements like Uranium are only made as
stars die, in supernovas. Our solar system actually
formed from the remains of another star, at which point
heavier elements were made.

Essentially, once they're gone, they are well and truly

gone. Only in particle accelerators can heavier elements
be made.

That said, there is plenty of Uranium, and if we switch to

other fuel cycles, then there's enough
to last for a very long time.

WASTES
One of the biggest disadvantages of nuclear energy is

the waste. Although the output of waste is relatively

small, it releases harmful radiation as it decays. There
is no method to get rid of the radioactivity of the
waste or speed up the rate of decay. The waste must
be sealed and buried in a safe location to prevent
contamination of the environment and other people.
Currently, there are no suitable locations that provide
a permanent storage site for nuclear waste.

WEAPONS

One of the most feared disadvantages

of nuclear energy is the potential for
weapons. Each year, every nuclear
reactor is capable of making enough
plutonium to build over thirty nuclear
bombs. Nuclear plants must be secured
well enough to prevent this material
from falling into the wrong hands.

COST
Cost is also one of the major disadvantages of
nuclear energy. It costs between three and
five billion dollars just to build a
nuclear powerplant. Maintenance and
operating costs are also high because lots of
money must be sent on safety systems in case
something goes wrong.

WARNING

Harmful radiation has had negative

effects on people and animals that have
included deformation , disease and even
death . A cancer caused by radiation
can also develop , but the more
extreme effects require an enormous
amount of radiation exposure.

RISKS
Nuclear power has the potential to be very
dangerous if it is put into the wrong hands.
When the fission process occurs inside of a
nuclear plant, it is controlled and stabilized.
When this same process is used in an
uncontrolled environment, a nuclear bomb is
created and nuclear power can become a huge
form of terrorism.

Even in situations where the nuclear energy is

stable, accidents may occur.
It an also cause seviour earthquake like Japan.

RADIATION PROBLEMS

The effects of routine releases of radioactivity from nuclear

plants depend somewhat on how the spent fuel is handled.
A typical estimate is that they may reduce our life expectancy
by 15 minutes.
Potential problems from accidents in transport of radioactive
materials are largely neutralized by elaborate packaging.
A great deal of such transport has taken place over the past 50
years and there have been numerous accidents, including fatal
ones.
However, from all of these accidents combined, there is less
than a 1% chance that even a single death will ever result from
radiation
exposure .

ACCIDENTS
Another one of the biggest

disadvantages of nuclear energy is the

occurrence of accidents due to core
meltdown. These accidents happen when
the core overheats and radiation
products are allowed to escape the
building. This contaminates the
surrounding area with radioactive
material that is very harmful people's
health, often causing cancer.
