I. Definition
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to
humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever
and severe joint pain. Other symptoms include
muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
The disease shares some clinical signs with
dengue, and can be misdiagnosed in areas where
dengue is common.

1999-2000 Democratic Republic of the Congo.
2005, a major outbreak in islands of the Indian Ocean.
2006 Indian Ocean.
2006 and 2007 India.
Since 2005, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Maldives and Myanmar
have reported over 1.9 million cases.
In 2007 first time in Europe, Italy.
There were 197 cases recorded, Ae. Albopictus are plausible in
Europe.
December 2013, autochthonous cases in St Martin.
Transmission has been confirmed in Anguilla, British Virgin
Islands, Dominica, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and
St Barthelemy. Aruba only reported imported cases.
As of 6 March 2014, there have been over 8000 suspected
cases in the region.
