MABALACAT BUS

TERMINAL

Terminal Types
Inter City Bus Terminal is usually found in the
downtown core and is accessible directly by local
transit, taxi, and auto.
Urban Suburban Commuter Terminal may be
located within the downtown core, as a central
passenger collection and distribution node, or on the
periphery of the core, as a rapid transit feeder station.

Terminal Types
Airport City Terminal provides primarily for the
transportation of airline passengers from an urban
center to the major airports it serves.
Suburban Inter Province Terminal is sometimes
referred to as park and ride terminals, because access
is primarily by auto, these facilities are provided with
open, paved parking spaces

PLANNING CONSIDERATIONS:
The functional organization of the terminal is governed by
the site and locations.
Area and shape of the lot.
The volume and type of bus operations
Passengers and bus/vehicle traffic circulations.
*The most significant planning requirement in Bus Terminal is the provisions for
parking space. The area should minimize walking distance to the terminal
provided with a covered walk connecting the parking area to the terminal building.

Space Requirements for Terminals:

Public Seating
Public seating should be directly accessible to the area
provided with drinking fountain, trash baskets, and clocks.
For inter city bus terminal, provide 1 seat for every 3
passengers
No. of passengers is calculated by multiplying the number of
loading berths by an average bus capacity between 35 to 38
persons.

Space Requirements for Terminals:

An 8 berths loading platform terminal requires seating
between 93 to 101 persons
35 x 8 = 280 = 93 passengers

3
35 x 8 = 304 = 101 passengers
3

Space Requirements for Terminals:

Ticketing Facilities
1 position for each 25-30 waiting room seats
Length of the counter space depends on the individual carrier
operation and the ticketing equipment used which varies from
0.90m to 1.50m per position or about 4.50 to 5.50 sq.m. per
position
Counter height is usually 1.05m

Space Requirements for Terminals:

Baggage Room
Must have an area of about 10% of the total building area or
contain about 4.5 sq.m. for each loading berth or whichever is
higher

Space Requirements for Terminals:

Dispatch Office
It controls all busses movements
Located at the concourse for direct observation of the loading
berths
The office size should be from 4.5 to 14 sq.m.

Space Requirements for Terminals:

Office
The area depends upon the type and size of the terminal
Rental Spaces
The amount of rental space to be provided for stores, shops,
concessions, etc., depends primarily on the earning potential
involved and the amount of space available

Design Pedestrian for Terminal

Passengers
Corridor
Its length could be estimated at 50cm per person spacing
Min. practical flow through a corridor is about 80 persons per
meter width per minute (PMM)
For normal walking speed and avoidance of traffic conflicts =
15 PMM or less
For commuter terminal where repetitive peaks and space
restraint occurs = 35-50 PMM

Design Pedestrian for Terminal

Passengers
Entrance
A standard of 40 persons per minute would be representative
of a busy situation with occasional traffic disruptions.
Where free-flowing traffic is desired, a standard of 20 persons
per minute should be adopted.

Design Pedestrian for Terminal

Passengers
Stairs
Max. flow of people on stairway is about 52 PMM of stairway in
the upward direction
An average of 1.8 sq.m. per person or more is required before
stair locomotion becomes normal and traffic conflicts with
other pedestrians can be avoided.
0.17m standard riser height or less

Platform Types
Parallel Loading
Requires excessive amount of space
Buses must usually wait until first bus exits
Large terminal requires pedestrian under/ overpass facilities to
protect passengers while crossing lanes.

Platform Types
Right-Angle Loading
Bus maneuvering is difficult
Straight Saw-tooth Loading
Efficient-employed where lot is comparatively narrow and
deep
Passenger has direct approach to loading door
Baggage truck can operate between buses for side loading

PLATFORM TYPES
Radial Saw-tooth Loading
Most efficient buses swing into position along natural driving
arc.
Most efficient buses swing into position along natural driving

Mabalacat Bus Terminal (Dau)

No. and type of establishments appropriate for
the assigned terminal:
Redevelopment of the existing commercial strip

S.W.O.T
ANALYSIS

Strengths
The site is located in an area where many private and public vehicles pass by.
The site is located near many commercial centers, such as supermarkets,
hotels and restaurants.
The site already has a reliable existing road network; one that leads to the
NLEx.
The site has an existing 6.00m wide service road on the opposite side of the
terminal. It can be used as a one-way entry or exit point for the buses.
The Mabalacat bus terminal is the only stop over terminal in the city.
There is no cut off for the number of bus to travel.
The terminal has already established its name.

Weaknesses
Walking to the provincial bus terminal is inconvenient for pedestrians since
there is no existing pathway for pedestrians.
The surrounding areas are not very pleasing to look at.
There are no clear markings for bus parking slots.
Spaces are not properly zoned.
There are no clear entry and exit points for the passengers.
It is located in a polluted area.
There were very few trees/ landscaping in the site.

Opportunities
People who work in Pampanga from outside of the province have the
Mabalacat terminal as their final destination since it is near the NLEx.
There arent many vacant sites in Dau that can accommodate buses. This
terminal will have no competition.
The urban-integrated terminal will provide a more efficient system of
transportation to the different parts of Pampanga.
Mabalacat City is a highly commercialized area. It can offer jobs that will bring
in people from outside of Pampanga. This is an advantage for the terminals
income.
Addition of mini buses with routes around Angeles and San Fernando could
bring additional income to the terminal.
The pollution may be minimized by the green strategies to be applied.

Threats

Environmental impact of the fumes from vehicles.

There are many other restaurants located directly outside of the terminals.
Security issues.
